They are supporting 2 servers and a T-3 connection out of their pockets, and the banner ads won't be paying for that and giving them a profit at the same time, they were only so they could survive and also give this service to the larger Community of the Internet. I hope the band can give their management a good talking-to and resolve this issue.
just an enjoyment of music. The Dead are a good band, and I've never taken any drugs when listening to them. If you really want more intellectually-challening music though, Phish is 100x better.
Although he mentions it, Cringley has missed the point: EVERYONE can MAKE MP3 files, put them up on their web page or, if they're a band, sign up with MP3.com or Goodnoise for distribution. The big companies are no longer the only content providers--everyone is. Until pundits understand this, they won't understand how the Internet has really changed things.
I enjoyed your rant, but I was surprised at your observations -- I'd always thought most "hackers" or people of the hacker mindset had a pretty strong sense of self: ie, they knew who they were, what they liked and what they didn't like, and it didn't make a goddamn difference if someone walked up to them and said, "Ha! Nobody wears their hair like that! You're stupid!" because they could just say "So what?". I do that, and I'm no hacker (but I'm an electrical engineering major so it's almost the same thing).
I enjoy the Jargon File (I even bought the print version so I could have a good laugh at the cartoons in the bathroom) but it's not my life. I hope those people who think it is will decide what they really like...
I'm making a movie about Gauss-Jordan elimination and I'm going to call it "Keanu Reeves" just to confuse everyone. The tagline for the movie will be....
Ahem, just remember that Mike Nelson has been writing since the first season, and has been the Head Writer since the second season. Not to mention that Kevin Murphy is still the macho voice of Tommy Servo!
I hope the new name doesn't have it. BLECH! I suggested "Automagically Inc." because I couldn't think of anything else. I'm sure everyone will hate it.:)
Why can no one write simply anymore? Why must every noun be covered in adjectives? "hip-gunning cowboy capitalists" "high-minded utopians" "the fluffy bunny of utopian daydreams" ?!? After the lawyers, we kill the pundits.
Since I first started playing with linux in '95... of course my machine is definately NOT production and I've broken it many times, but I really like that feeling of power!:)

You know, all you people don't get it. The show is not about some stupid characters, IT'S ABOUT MAKING FUN OF MOVIES!!! Any bunch of idiots can do that! And that's why almost every episode of seasons 8 and 9 had me falling off my chair and tears coming out of my eyes.
I have collected about 300 old 'free' CDs (from AOL to MSN to crap given out at shows to archived newsweeklies to fucked up CD-Rs), and I plan to tile an entire room in my house with them... perhaps the bathroom?:)
Yep, that was me too... how old was I then? 12 or 13 years old! I used to chat on the 'Infocom Interactive Fiction' bulletin board. But luckily those days are gone, because it was really a piece of shit compared to the beautiful anarchy that is USENET. Where else can one find alt.look.at.me.i.am.a.fish ? Prodigy is DEAD! YAY!
My statistics teacher told our class that there was a major change in the way statistics was taught about 15 years ago and that was why almost every survey taken in the '90s sucked eggs. I have no idea if he was making it up or what, but it could be right... look what happened when they took away phonics.
College is not a waste of time, especially for academia-loving realworld-hating geeks like me. Maybe it's corny, but I think college is an experience where a young student meets people who challenge their ideas about the world, where a kid out of high school who doesn't know much gets a chance to grow up and learn at the same time -- DON'T SKIP IT, even if it's only 2 years at a community college. The impatient part of me can't wait to get my BSEE at Rutgers, but mostly I want to savor my college time and I'm going to make sure my future kids go to college (and dorm and go to parties etc etc).
...while I was a bit fed up with the way late 20th-century ultraglobalcapitalist greed is taking over the world, I really only wanted to give TMBG a good plug, since I'm pretty into them right now.:)
They're still selling the U.S. Robotics, Inc. brand name (unlike Adaptec when they bought Trantor) so at least there's still one Isaac Asimov-derived brand name out there!

Sorry about the title -- I couldn't resist. :)

You listen to exactly what I listen to! Are you sure we aren't the same person? All my car CDs are Phish and They Might Be Giants...

You may be and/or feel like an outcast, but I am not.

he must have one of those little Intel-plugin cards... hey, I "assumed."
because I can't get to it. He should try Linux+Apache. :) Even during peak hours Slashdot is pretty fast!
