    The test that the school board person took was for tenth graders. The sample questions linked are from two entirely different tests. The first three are for fourth graders and the second three are for eighth graders.

    Yes it does. I have a a very low traffic blog so I can see the results easily. Doing a search where my posts come up in the first page of results causes each page to register two pageviews in the blogger stats for each one.

    It seems to me that with an ideal search engine it wouldn't require a special skill to get relevant spam-free results.

    Disagree completely. I think the ads are quite obvious in that

    A) It clearly states it is a 3G coverage map

    and

    B) There is a sentence on the bottom of the screen that says that voice and data service are available outside the 3G coverage area.

    IIRC, the ad says "3G" about 1 brazillion times as well.

    Here is the answer to that oft-posed question, "What's a Hokie?" and an explanation of other Tech traditions. What is a Hokie? The origin of the word "Hokie" has nothing to do with a turkey. It was coined by O. M. Stull (class of 1896), who used it in a spirit yell he wrote for a competition.

    Windows 98 is a perfectly good OS for home users. I have two linux boxes in my house that I use for programming, file serving, wireless network, etc.

    Guess what the third one runs? Win98.

    Are you being sarcastic? I can't tell, perhaps because it's 4:30 AM. Anyway, we'll assume you're being serious.

    Don't be ridiculous. I'm sure that thousands of hours of research and editing go into an encyclopedia such as Britannica. The authors and editors make this effort so you don't have to. What you are paying for is convenience and accuracy.

    If you want to take the time to go research everything yourself and not pay Britannica, that's fine. But if you want to find information on a ton of topics that you can count on to be well organized and accurate, go to an established encyclopedia such as Britannica.

    An encyclopedia isn't a scientific journal where you go to find newly discovered facts. It's a research tool.

    If you log into a lot of boxes having a good command prompt can make a big difference. A different color or having the hostname in the prompt can prevent making a silly mistake.

    True, but at traffic levels of 1957. There are plenty of places on the interstates where there's just too much traffic to drive safely over 55 or 60.

    I'm not sure if your joke has so many layers that it is going over my head, but it seems like it was "Yet Another Evil Corporate Move" and that they're only backing down because they got called out for it.

    In which case, we may have jumped to a conclusion, but it was still the right one.

    Hard work now could mean less trouble later in life. But it might not.

    If I am killing myself working now and get hit by a bus tomorrow, then all that hard work doesn't get me jack.

    I've always been a 'plan for the future' kind of guy. Work and save now, enjoy it later. Lately I've really been taking the view that you should take all you can out of life all the time.

    I haven't thought about asking my employer for less hours and less salary, but I've been thinking about switching from full time to contracting and just working less, period.

    If you had a company with a (possibly) viable business model that involved actually charging the customer, you were screwed unless:

    A) NO ONE else had your technolgy/service. Because if they did, they would just give it away. Why pay when I can get it for free?
    or
    B) You are the Wall Street Journal or eBay.

    He gives some clues in the story:
    A company with $20 million in revenue really needs to have about $10 million in the bank in case a customer doesn't pay, the economy turns soft, an important project is late, etc. Because we'd been growing 1000 percent per year we never had more than a couple of million dollars in the bank.
    Now we have a soft economy. They wouldn't have had cash. Ergo, problems.

    Last time I checked SNL, MadTV et al are not trying to solve any problems. They're trying to entertain audiences.

    I won't say here whether or not any of these shows achieve this goal, but that's not really the point.
