The thing is that this new internet will not be the enternet or anything like it. It will be a controlled place where you go to consume information produced with the aim of being sold.
It is something which gets trialed in various guises again and again. So far it has failed every time. Here In Australia there was a Mob called Free online which offered (dialup at the time) at no charge, providing you remained in their specailly constructed little world. If you left to look at the real internet, well that was billable.
Technical reasons certainly won't make this happen (I mean look at the failure to get anyone to move to ip6) However political will might very well do so, and that will be a dark day for a lot of free speech.
Free expression will be relegated to some prescribed sets of areas with stringent controls around the margins. Copyright will be enforced so ridgedly that even fair use will become impossible. Any criticism of the new order will be removed without notice and the critics, if they persist, will have their access terminated.
The last point already happens on a smaller scale. (Even Wikipeida has barred some people from editing articles). The new internet would make it a condition of use.
We can only hope that the next attempt to produce this networked shopping center will also be a dismal failure which financially ruins its backers.

Now scientists in China and the United States believe the weight of water, and the effect of it penetrating into the rock, could have affected the pressure on the fault line underneath, possibly unleashing a chain of ruptures that led to the quake
Not really feasible. Saturn has a gravitational pull of 0.92G and Neptune has 1.14G and both of them have ended up as gas planets.
The real killer for humans would the the atmospheric pressure, not the gravity.
Jupiter is the only planet where the gravitational pull is significantly greater then on earth 2.36g.
Volume increase much faster then surface area. so you need to reduced the density to match, otherwise your surface gravity goes up. push this too far and you don't have enough left to make a solid surface that can maintain structural integrity, or hold up heavy things like oceans.
The interesting thing which isn't present in our solar system is a world that is predominantly made of liquid. I believe some nineteenth century astronomers thought that Neptune was such a world.
I totally agree. Just because I know about computers dosn't mean that other people do.
The take home lesson here is the need to request assistance. Eventually her collage told her how to submit assignments from OpenOffice.
More interestingly the ISP helped her set get connected from Ubuntu. This last point may have been influenced by Media attention. I don't know anything about Verizon, but do know how much of a challenge it can be dealing with my ISP their tech support is not geared to handle anything other than windows.
Hmm... can you patent illegal business models and then sue the Mob for infringing on your patents?
A Method for distribution of a contraband substance.
Oh the possibilities...
Please read Chapter 3 of Freakonomics or at least the synopsis on Wikipedia. Short answer dealers get to handle a lot of money in much the same way as bank tellers do. They don't get to keep all that much,
Ah yes the Octopus.
a creature with 3 hearts and green blood.
ofcurse it turns out that green blood is not as efficent as red blood (the correct biological names escape me). This is the reason the Octopuses can't survive out of water very long.
I recall two things from my last visit to the aquarium:
1: The Octopus was the only animal which had toys in its tank
2: the Cuttle fish and Squid (which are related) where the only animals who seemed to watch you back. (and they had a continous procession of people to watch all day).
Yes modern medicine changes the rules a little. However it does not stop young males (in particular) from engaging in various hi risk activitites like base jumping street racing etc. which do serve to remove some individuals from the gene pool.
It is also a very western perspective. Sure in OECD countries we have gernally low child mortality rates but this isn't true everywhere in the world. Evolution is still going on in less advanaged parts of the world.
Evolution is till going on in 3rd world countries, particularly the industrialized ones where pollution goes unchecked and people who can't handle contaminated air and water have a good chance of dieing in childhood.
If I recall correctly Communities which have engaged perpetuated the model of older fathers having many children (ie the Mormans) have an increased incidence of some congenital conditions due to their genetic makeup being dominated by a dozen or so of the religions founding fathers. Heck even they have moved away from polygamy for the most part.
Humans have a complex social life and the definition of fitness in a complex society is different to what it is among other mammals. having greater physical strength is not necessarily a deciding factor.
And we still have a lot of social groups which self select to remain isolated from the broader human population.
PS short sightedness has been shown to be largly caused by environmental factors and not genetics. If you live in a city, and very rarly get to look at anything further away then accross the street, you have much higher changes of needing glasses than your twin, who is brought up in the country. and gets to look out to the horizon every day.

The other thing that's handy about Wikipedia is that you don't need a subscription to read the articles.
Yes I did. They are promising to review things within 20 minutes (as I noted in my summary).
