One interesting DNS scheme I've seen maps element names to subnet IP address by atomic number, e.g.
x.x.x.1 hydrogen, h
x.x.x.2 helium, he
x.x.x.28 nickel, n
x.x.x.29 copper, cu
x.x.x.97 berkelium, bk
You get names, abbreviated names, and the Periodic Table as a failover DNS, all with no creativity required.
