I use windows 2000 at work as a developer machine, the machine is locked down and virus scans are run every day. I leave my machine on all the time (shut down on friday for the weekend) and I find that I reboot at least 5 to 6 times a week.
a lot of folks who really don't like it when their database goes tits up during times of large transactional volume don't mind paying for hardware that works and don't want to wait for goodparts34 to ship that new harddrive
your not using the software "correctly" (as defined by him) why should he be responsible for your mistake? Yeah, it's a crummy thing to do but if folks would just pay the 5 bucks to use the program these guys wouldn't be so pissed of.
pirate AIX copy? this isn't script kiddy hardware, it is a real server. I doubt any org that uses that kind of kit would risk voiding their support contract.
they tried to force us 'rebels' to use IE only by checking the user agent. all I did is get the firefox identity plugin and now those morons think i'm using internet explorer.
strange, I've used redhat since 5.0 and have never been rooted. I guess some folks just don't realize that you should secure your machine before connecting it to an unsecure network.
I develop software on a 22" monitor running at 1920 X 1440 and I love it.
1600 X 1200 is too small to develop in =-)
when reiserfs gets recovery tools then i'll think about using it.
speed is great, but software is not perfect. I want something that allows me to recover from their bugs

it is not as far fetched as you may think.
better the windows emulation on OS/2!
IBM has intel and POWER based workstations. zSeries is the mainframe line.
as somebody has said before, why is it any different when the mail server or file server or the network gets screwed up?
a lot of people in big companies can't get work done on their PCs without their mail client, etc
the Power 5 is even better. HT done right with muli core design.

if nagging worked, then these folks wouldn't be so pissed off
the former company rational had a product called clearcase that is a widely used sorce control product.
IBM seems to have adopted it as their source control platform of choice. I guess I mixed up team connection with an old source control program.
IBM owns rational, so i doubt team connection (if your refering to their old source control software) will ever get ported to this platform.

And for balance, contrast it with the way it works on a properly-maintained linux machine:
1. Plug in USB mass storage device.
it works.
that really is not as bad as people think. on linux it all goes over local domain sockets - a memcpy() operation
here
the latest mozilla from CVS doesn't seem to show this bug anymore.

everything displays the same as IE.
I have an Nvidia card and have never had to recompile my linux kernel to get it working
with all the hidden goatse links around here I'll let somebody else hit a link with the word Penetrator in it.
there are many times i'd be willing to pay a buck or two to get through the shitty traffic in my city.
shoudn't the computer also not make the user wait just because it is trying to be 'correct'?

you certainly can buy a dell without an os. I didn't because I like to dual boot.
you can always use linux.
