price for price, you can buy a dual PII-400 from dell for the same price as a top-end G3, and the NT box will win for any real-world tasks like photoshop, CAD, rendering, serving, whatever.
I bought my mac (7600/132) when i was at college 'cos i needed the high floating-point performance (running mklinux), but apple these days are trading entirely on past goodwill and slick marketing.
It's the TPC-D benchmark, which is an industry standard designed to simulate datawarehousing style jobs. Microsoft don't have anything to compare to oracle's new MVIEWs, which is why they fail.
However, this isn't the point: in the midrange space (say, a few dozen gigabytes) microsoft are poised to make big inroads, mostly in OLAP where they have a relatively mature toolset available. A quad xeon by compaq is competitive with Sun's E250 and E450 boxes in this space.
Note also, however, that oracle runs, and runs well, on NT. An oracle engineer told me the other week that they don't really care about the OS at this stage, they just want to sell database products while they complete their preparation for Raw Iron.
i *very* much doubt perl/tk is faster than VB5, and it doesn't even come close to VB's database app RAD capability.

... which is fine for hacking trivial cgis in your bedroom, but almost useless for long-term ongoing team projects. languages like pl/sql and ada force you into nice structures and enforce data types.
i have experienced excellent performance improvements on NT for both web serving and SQL server, over already impressive performance, approximately 1.9x for the first CPU added, dropping to avout 3.4 for quad CPUs.
you'd expect 16 cpus giving approximately 14x the performance of 1 on a modern SGI, as a rule of thumb. sequents, tho', are about as close to linear as you can get.
that's very naive. communism and fascism are simply variations of collectivism: the idea that the wishes of the individual are worthless and exist only to serve the state/the church/whatever.

FYI, i run red hat at home, and use bash and xemacs every day.
there is a *lot* of good open source stuff, but linux isn't an example of it.
err, no. intel wants you to keep on upgrading, it's the only way they can survive. they are very smart, and realise that low margins/high volume and a constant upgrade cycle/path are key to long-term success. and it's worked, and jealous, incompetent competitors want to government to help them.
i can't understand why ESR can even be mentioned in the same book as people like RMS. He's done nothing for open source but shoot his mouth off. (yes i know he wrote a couple of tiny programs once. big deal).
the brain is just biology, which is just an abstraction layer on top of chemistry, which is similarly abstracted above physics. nothing non-computable there.
