Yea... as much as you'd like to pretend that you're intelligent and insightful - you're not. You act as if there is some sort of grand plan that guides what should and should not exists here on Earth. If that is the case - who are you to say that humans tinkering with something like strawberries isn't part of that plan - part of the evolutionary process. After all - if evolution does select only certain traits that are meant to exists than isn't the existance of humans that possess the intelligence and knowledge to alter genes something that was meant to happen "according to the evolution of life"? If you're not saying there is a plan - then who are you to say that humans shouldn't be tinkering with genetics?
I have heard of C.E. programs focusing more on hardware and CS focus more on software, but in practice I don't think that is true.
Um, at I don't know about other schools - but at Michigan State University the difference is *very* drastic. Computer Engineers take hardly any of the same classes as Computer Scientist. CE majors take almost entirely electric engineering classes.
But the big problem today is that you need more than just a piece of chalk, a Blackboard and a teacher for a good education, you need to have computers and all sorts of High Tech devices.
Bullshit -- you realize you are saying that there were no well-educated human beings before the advent of computers?
I've ripped every album I own and have about 35 gigs worth of mp3's right now (this includes all the live/rare/acoustic stuff i collect too). Not really difficult to fill 20...
Ok.. but who is to say global warming is bad.. maybe if we cause global warming it will hold off an ice-age that would have wiped out more people/animals/plants/whatever?..
Eh... interesting theory -- but there are too many things that point to jackson being the arch-nemesis. First - the mother says something about how the real evil mastermind guy has some weird look in his eyes -- which samuel l. jackson did. That, and jackson *was* the opposite of the hero -- he was nutso fragile while willis was unbreakable. However... he *did* say that he only has the most mild form of the disease - so I guess maybe there could be someone with the more severe form that could be more opposite:P.
On a side note -- I didn't actually think jackson's character was well-meaning. I thought he was just evil and nutso.. but he wanted to find willis' character because it would make him feel like he was less crazy - not because he was the guy who could save humanity.
Um, people who are blaming Nader are making a retarded argument. It makes about as much sense as blaming the people who didn't vote for Al Gore's loss of those states. Woowoo... whatever.. . Yeah.. if the people who voted for Nader had voted for al gore instead then al gore would have won. and if the people who voted for bush voted for al gore instead he would have won... so what is your point.
Um... what kind of bad crack are you on? The chances of being harmed by terrorists in this country is far less than that of being killed by lightning. When was the last time you heard of a terrorist attack on the United States (aside from nutso militia punks)? And the reason other countries dislike us is because we're doing better than they are economically... they can say whatever they want - but what it boils down to is we're doing better than they are, and they are jealous.
The DMCA IS destructive of the ends established in the Declaration, and it is our right to abolish the DMCA. It is not only our right, but now it is our responsibility to eliminate the DMCA. The DMCA will affect our happiness in the future; we will become drones, being forced by the MPAA to shell out X amount of dollars to watch a pre-recorded movie for Y amount of time. Even worse, the RIAA might soon mandate that we pay for FM radio by the minute. I fear that this idea (or a similar incarnation) isn't far off.
What, are they going to put a fucking gun to your head? Pull your head out of your ass. If you don't want to "shell out X amount of dollars" to see a movie then for the love of god don't. Show those money-grubbing bastards by not giving them any of your money. If a movie is soo good you can't go without seeing it, then it's probably worth whatever X amount of dollars they're charging. If you don't want to pay X amount of dollars to see something then chances are it's not very good and you're not missing anything. I don't see why everyone is so damned upset about the DMCA -- if ya don't like it just don't buy anything sold by the RIAA, MPAA, or any other group. Watch indy films, find unsigned artist to listen to on mp3.com. If they start charging to listen to FM stations by the minute or whatever then don't listen to FM radio stations -- listen to cd's of artists you've found on mp3.com.. listen to internet radio stations.. whatever...... whatever... get a live.. move on... the world isn't going to end.
I've been reading slashdot for almost 3 years now (I think about that long... could be off, has been a while anyhoo:). I'm simply really not much of a poster though -- I usually don't have the time to post. I just like reading the articles and other people's takes on them mostly. I'm posting a lot on this article however because I happen to know some facts in the matter that havn't been brought to light by the article and I think have some relavance. PS. I'm a He:P
Perhaps he had some full length films on his computer, I can't say for sure either way - I can say for sure that I have never *seen* any films on his server and if they were on there they weren't in a location that I had any access to.
I've been around slashdot for quite some time, I'm just not a huge poster (mostly just read everything). If you have any questions to ask of me feel free. I do have 20 karma points as you can see, so obviously I didn't just create this account to post for just this specific story (I have posted in the past, just not a great deal). He used his DSL Line at home for about 4 or 5 months, and a 56k modem before that to obtain the most of large majority of his collection. He is currently at college as a freshman and has only been using a university connection to do trading for a short time. Feel free to email me at marty@mookow.NOSPAMPLEASE.dhs.org if you have any questions to ask of me.
Oh yeah - and it wasn't just distributing anything/everything to random people. He allowed people who had rare/acoustic/live stuff to trade to upload to his site and in turn he'd give them access to his site. It created a *small* community of traders who loved acoustic/live music. I for one was very thankful to this individual because he allowed me to get many acoustic versions of songs that I likely would not have been able to find anywhere else.
Yes, he had 40 gigs of *LIVE* and *ACOUSTIC* performances - not studio albums. There is nothing criminal in have 100 gigs of harddrive space either. I have 60 gigs to store the mp3's of all the CD's I own (as well as to have large amounts of space free while doing video and sound editing). People here on slashdot need to quick jumping to conclusions based on knowledge they *don't* have.
Thanks for playing, but you're not exactly "in the know". 1) This kid built up almost his entire collection of *Live/Acoustic/Rare* mp3's on a modem/dsl line at home. 2) He didn't just let anyone leech off his server. He creates accounts for other people who have lots of rare/acoustic songs that he doesn't have and trades with only them. This kid wasn't exactly a bandwidth hog, and you sound like an idiot when you make unfounded claims like that with *no* evidence what so ever.
What they don't tell in the article is that 99.9% of the mp3's this kid had were rare/live/acoustic songs. He had maybe 2 or 3 studio albums on his site that people have uploaded.
He wasn't just some Warez d00d. He hardly had *any* studio material. His site consisted almost entirely of live/rare/acoustic stuff. I've known/been trading rare stuff with this guy for a long time now.
This would be a valid comparison if: 1) You actually had to drive or walk to a building somewhere to "check out" a song - and while it was checked out nobody else in the area could "check out" the same song (or only a limited number of people anyhoo). 2) The library let you check out as many of their several million publications as you wanted at one time and let you keep the publications.
Heh.. I could go on and on listing reasons why this is a terrible comparison, but I won't... in a hurry - no time to type 'em up:P...
It seems when there are articles talking about music everyone here on slashdot is of the opinion it should be free and that things like napster are ok. Yet when we are talking about work that some people on slashdot create actually being distributed everyone screams bloody murder? Is it just me or does this seem a tad hypocritical? I mean, sure - this webpage is trying to make money - but then again so is napster (hence the reason investors have given them millions of dollars).
Mine is there and I never gave them permission to sell it. As far as I know, I am the sole owner of the copyright on my thesis.
How many musicians on napster gave their permission for their work to be distributed? Why do people on slashdot complain about *their* copyrights being violated, yet vehemently defend their right to violate the copyrights of musicians? It all seems silly to me...
Um... you ever studied US government in any sort of detail? You have *any* idea how long it was before the bill of rights even applied to the states (this is *including* things such as cruel and unusual punishment). The constitution applies to the national government. Certain ammendments have been deemed by the supreme court to apply at the state level as well. So, just because the government can't do it doesn't mean states can't (A state can completely ban gun sales if they want -- congress can't do that).
Eh... last time I checked it was illegal to stop specific people (ie. stopping all black people), however iy isn't illegal to stop say - every 4th person. And why do people always just spurt out stupid things like "apparently the fourth amendment doesn't mean anything anymore"... if you're going to make a ridiculous claim - at least explain in detail what that is suppose to mean and why. Yes, privacy is a good thing - but you also like to live in relative safety don't you? That is the job of the police - enforce laws and provide you safety. They can do their job much easier/more efficient if people aren't completely uncooperative for *no* reason. IF you have nothing to hide, how does it hurt you to help them do their job? When the police officer asked this jackass for his ID and he absolutely refused how were the police to know that he wasn't refusing because he was some known terrorist or something planning to gun down a bunch of people? Anyhoo.. blah.. whatever.. i don't wanna write anymore:)
The alternative is that you don't get the music. You're not entitled to it. You have no inherent right to own the fruits of someone elses labor (yes, people put *work* into creating their music and you are *stealing* from them). If you don't want to pay what they are asking for their work then you just don't get to have it. I want a dodge viper, but i'm not willing to pay $70,000 to get one. This doesn't mean i should be able to steal one, or go take one and leave behind $1,000 because that's what I think is a fair price.
(warning: off-topic).. Sorry... I can't fathom evening *considering* joining the ACLU. I have no respect for an orginization that is so blatently stupid as to sue the State of Michigan for discrimination because it only offered scholarships to people who did *WELL* on a state educational proficiency test. Basically they're sueing the state of Michigan because they treat people who don't work as hard as others or are not as smart differently than they treat people who do work hard and are smart. Completley nuts -- while they're at it they should sue every university that doesn't let people in because of poor grades and test scores -- because they too are discriminating against people that aren't intelligent or hard-working.

I'm a friend of his. I have known this individual for quite a long time. He told me about his computer being confiscated the day it happened.
