I don't recall the exact figure (and I'm not about to stop playing Skies of Arcadia to find out at the moment) but it was roughly 200.

Uh, rather than just paying the support fee, why not ask the reason for being charged? Customer service can answer why you're paying. Desktop incidents depend on several things. Win95 is now fee based only. Win98/ME should be 90 days free support/fee based after that. I believe the professional products (server, etc) are fee based only. All calls on the 800# are fee based. Like I said above.. Ask customer service. -X

  3. Re:Sega: One new console every two years. on Sega Announces Dreamcast Successor · · Score: 1

While it may not do much to improve the math, neither the 32X nor the Sega CD are consoles. They're only upgrades for the Genesis.

This "NEW" console is only a reworked Dreamcast and is not being made by Sega.

  4. Re:Did I miss something? Yes. on Salon on the XBox · · Score: 1

It might as well be a PC. The on parts of the XBox that seem to be custom is the gfx chip and the OS. Everything else seems to be rehashed PC components. Big Whoop! If this is how people want to consider something a console machine, and PC manufacturer could make a box with hardware that doesn't change and claim that it's magically a console machine.

The Dreamcast/PS2 are leagues apart from the XBox. They share very few common denominators with the PC world, unlike the XBox. They also cater to a completely different market.

  5. Re:Great game, but... on Descent 3 For Linux · · Score: 1

Loki is doing the Linux community a lot of good. Without efforts like this, very few if any games would ever have a Linux port. Companies like Westwood and Maxis aren't going to bother risking capital on anything if they can't be reassured that it's worth they're efforts. (Like they're going to even care if they can just break even.) Instead, companies like Loki take the risk for them.

But hey, you have it all figured out, right? You go ahead and convince Maxis to port The Sims to Linux.

  6. Katz misses MANY points.. on The Message from Seattle · · Score: 1

After reading Katz's latest article, I wonder exactly how much attention he really paid to what went on in Seattle? After reading it, I get the impression that he's just trying to jump on the bandwagon of the moment.

Firstly, the protests weren't only about human rights issues or the issues of low paid workers. There were a lot of people out there that were farmers and business owners who feel their livelihood threatened due to the practices of corperations in third world countries. (Low cost of operations and nearly-nil labor wages.)

Another point Katz seemed to miss was the fact that the protesters were NOT on the side of the vandals. Even they realised that the destruction only hurt their cause.

It's one thing to want to get us angry at the practices of the WTO, but give us ALL the facts, eh? Enough with the sensationalistic journalism.

(How many even heard about the striking Kaiser worker who stopped other protesters from flying the flag at the jail upside down?)

  7. Re:Was cracking the video DVD done too early? on DVD Hack Delays DVD Audio · · Score: 1

No. It really doesn't matter WHEN dvd was "cracked."

The whole point a lot of people seem to miss here is that you can't guard the data forever. I can take the output from either a stand-alone dvd player or the output on my dvd decorder card and bring it right back in the computer using my MGA200-TV. I could even record it at that point if I so desired with very little loss in quality.

So what's to stop someone from doing the same thing with a dvd-audio and their soundcard? Nothing.

In order to really make the protection work, they'd basically have to make some sort of signal protection ala macrovision, but at the same time, you'd basically need to replace all existing audio/video hardware to make it work. This simply isn't going to happen.

All in all, this is a non issue. It's still much easier to copy a vhs tape than it is a dvd, and it's done more on a regualar basis. The only reason a big stink is being made is that the people who broke the css protection have basically thrown sand in their faces..

  8. Why not add an option to user(s) prefs instead? #2 on On the Subject of Trolls · · Score: 1

(Made an oops on the last one..)

As I was going to say, instead of refusing posts that fall below a certain threshold, why not add something to user(s) prefs that would allow them to ignore any comments that fall below a certain score? That way, no one is "censored" per se, and anyone who has a negative karma can perhaps reverse it if they so desire.

    Just an idea.

  10. What exactly is HACKING on The Road To Linux -- The Summit, but not the Peak · · Score: 1

Well, if some guy can write an article in 2600 about "hacking" one of those stupid electronic pets, I don't see why someone who's starting to learn the inner workings of an os for the first time can't call it the same thing.

One more thing... Hackers do play games. Who do you think writes them?
