Actually this has not much to do with multiplexing, which is already in place to a large degree. I think (AT&T at least) is using about 6-7 different colors on their main fibers...
The colors dont interfere anyways, but having a higher reflectivity should make it so you can have longer runs of cables without repeater stations.
I'll spend my money and make my kids smarter, better, and quicker. This is the way it is, has always been, and always will be. You're kidding youself if you think otherwise. It just so happens that genetic engineering is the ultimate expression of this phenonomon. We've got lots of problems in society as is; This isn't the biggest. Might it be 100 years from now? Maybe. But I'll make sure my offspring have every advantage I can give them in that world, the same as my parents did for me, and the same as their parents did for them.
Selfishness and greed. Makes one wonder if the human race deserves to survive.
Wrong answer private. Animals do the same thing. They want their offspring to have better chances to survive than other animals. Its the law of nature. Survival. Members of the feline family have been known to eat offspring of other prides to ensure sufficent resources for their own progeny. Do they deserve to live? Its survival of fittest, and always has been. Do my kids "deserve" to survive more than yours? I dont know, thats a moral question. But I will do whatever it takes to make sure my kids will survive, hopefully NOT at the expense of others. However I would be remiss as a parent *NOT* to give them whatever advantages I can.

Yeah, and the comment about ATT "divesting itself" of the baby bells. Yeah right, it was not like the Federal Government *made em* do it, they wanted to break up.
"You may not agree with the law or its interpretation, but that's no excuse for breaking it! If you disagree that badly then there are perfectly legal means to protest which are a lot more effective in the long run. This case certainly proves that point."
I couldnot disagree more. When a citizen beleives a law to be wrong, immoral, or unethical, he/she is not only obligated to speak out against it, but I believe he/she is obligated to break it. (Civil Disobedience).
He forgot to mention one point, the sound quality of MP3s is quite a bit less than CD's. Some people might not care, but if youre like me, you like CLEAN sounding music. The difference is sound quality is especially noticable with a nice set of headphones.
I use Napster/MP3's to decide whether or not I like an artist/album before I shell out $15 for a CD that might suck.
Yes, I download music off of Napster (piracy, I guess), but if I like it, I'll go buy the CD. If I don't like it, I will get around to deleting it, sooner or later, honest. I dont want to keep my harddrive full of music I dont like.
I'm all for indie artists, and I have no intentions of stealing their music. They will simply have to trust fans to buy their CD's after they sample it. Real fans WONT steal from the bands they love.
Whatever Anonymous Coward. Programs suck nowadays for the same reason we got left with the Y2K bug, management decisions. Too much work, too few coders, and no time to do anything right, much less test. You think kids cant program nowadays? Can you say Linux? Ever seen Half-Life?
Dont make blanket statements out your ass like " And some people wonder why software is so bad. Becuase the goddam kids can't program at all. Not like my day... "
Im not even that good of a programmer, but I would throw the guantlet down with you anyday. Bring it on old cranky anonymous codger.
I saw some interesting posts about the end of humanity, and Terminator and all that stuff.
Some friends and I went shooting yesterday, and some of the things we shot at were old hard drives, old old PC's, etc etc. We even placed some 1/2 inch steel plates in front of said targets to see which calibers would penetrate etc. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera so I have no pics, but just because something is made out of metal does not means its bullet proof.
As long as we keep the guns, I dont care how smart, or able, or capable robots become. If we give them guns, and control over the military we are in deep doo-doo.
My advice, is to keep the weapons away from them, and keep your own. (Preferably a decent sized caliber rifle, or a monster handgun like a casull 454)
My real concern however is what will happen to humanity if robot capabilities progress to the point of doing everything. Humans will atrophy in all ways if we dont have to do anything anymore. Fading out to me is much more scary then getting stamped out.
P.S. If anyone cares heres some of the results of our unoffical experiments:
A standard tower PC can actually stop shotgun pellets (at smaller guage of shot, we didnot have the heavier shot to try with). The pellets simply would not penetrate the case. Any other weapon though, such as slugs in the shotgun, or even a little.22 went right through it no problem. Now thinking that robots might have a little more armor, (ala Terminator) We put some 1/2inch think steel plates in front of the PC's. This steel stopped all caliber pistols,.22,.30(special).357 and.40 caliber. The only pistol that would penetrate (only on a clean shot) was my.454 casull, and this was with only solid rounds. Hollowpoint or softtips would just mush up. The 7.62 X 39 assault rifle rounds were another story. Right through it like it wasnot even there.
You can have my guns when you pry my cold dead finger off the trigger.
Please dont try to divine my attitudes or intentions. I do not believe the internet belongs to the US, nor do I feel I have the superior attitude of "feel lucky you can play with it". I just didnot(and still dont) see where this new site claims to be the end-all for all internet laws everywhere. You claimed it was, and was lacking in non-US content. If it does claim to be the end all for all Internet law, you would be right, but again, I dont see this attitude on the site. Am I wrong?
When are we going to get "internet" sites that notice the rest of the world?" </whine>
When the rest of the world gets off its ass and does it itself.
If you want something, build it yourself. Why do people expect someone else to do everything and then bitch and moan about how it does not make every single person in the world happy?
As everyone knows the purpose of taxes is to help provide services for everybody. US Fed taxes provide for our military, federal highways, and other useful things. States tax us for state level services, unemployment, state highways, blah blah. Counties and cities tax us for schools, county/city roads, cops, firefighetrs, water and sewer services.
I have no problem paying these taxes for these useful services. Its the useless BS that I hate paying for. Subsidies to farmers to NOT grow things? Foriegn aid to countries that take our money and then spit in out face? Welfare for people who dont want to work? Blah blah the list goes on.
The concept of taxing internet sales to "level" the playing field is crap. Alot of people still use and will continue to use meatspace shopping. I for one like to look at something with my own eyes before I buy it. I only buy things online if I already know exactly what I want, and I can find it cheaper. So what if meatspace stores have to pay more taxes? They have some value that online shopping cant necessarily compete with. Let the consumer choose, and if the store front goes the way of the dinosaur, so be it. Dont try to kill the online shopping idea so its "fair".
Also, the concept of taxing retail stores to help provide for the infrastructure somewhat makes sense. But in a way it doesnot. The 60% Tax I pay for my gas pays for roads. My local taxes already pay for the cops. What infrastructure is the govt providing that they need my money for, that they dont already get from somewhere else? They didnot build the mall, the retailers/land owners did. They pay local property taxes for cops etc too.
This concept goes even further with the internet. What infrastructure do I need to pay for again? The internet is mostly owned by big ISP's, and I pay for that infrastructure by my ISP fees.
This is just another way to get more blood from the people.

I would agree with you. Many Americans I know are ashamed about a many great things regarding our country. Our leaders have no moral or ethical constraints, we go around blowing the shit out small defenseless countries (Bosnia) and give crap to others who try to do the same thing (Chechnya/Tibet/etc).
As far as the trade/imperialist idea of shoving bad things down other countries throats (such as cigarattes) the American people also suffer from it. Advertising cannot be escaped, phone, snail mail, email, radio, TV, its everywhere, and it invades our senses like a something rotten...
We are talking about 3 seperate things: 1. American Government (yuck) 2. Microsoft is far more of a monoploy than AOL-Time. Why? Fewer alternatives.
OS/2? Good OS?, but no support. Macintosh? Fine, if you want to buy a new machine. Linux? In time, yes. Right now, its just not major league. (Asbestos suit put on- im sorry but when more hardware works, and when more software is available, sure.)
Microsoft also has a proven track record for squashing competition and doing other nefarious business practices.
