If enough people do this then the database would be so full of conflicting information that it won't be useable. And also imagine the reactions of parents who find out that their kids are being investigated incase they are mass killers waiting to happen when they don't even own a computer. One possible reason could be that auctioning off these urls would create a artifically high price for linux urls. If there is a high price on the urls, it would encourage people to buy whatever varients they can think of, and sit on them until someone else wants them - which is not a good thing, and something I think that this auction would have encouraged. IF Linus keeps control of the what urls can be used and by whom, then we don't have to worry about url squatters.
