  1. HP DeskJet 500 on Are Printers What They Used To Be? · · Score: 1

My HP DeskJet 500 still works; it is still my only printer. It was originally attached to a 386.

  2. Re:agent identification for Safari on All-New PowerBooks, Web Browser Featured at Macworld · · Score: 2, Insightful

If everyone coded according to the standards [w3.org] instead of using browser-specific hacks, its user-agent string wouldn't matter

Well, if browsers actually implemented the standards, then standards-compliant code would work cross-browser. Alas, it does not, so browser-specific code becomes necessary. However, doing this by detecting the user-agent string is ill-advised. Object detection generally works better.

  3. Re:Epitonic on Discovering New Music? · · Score: 1

Yes, it's limited to select genres of music, but I've found some great stuff through Epitonic. Highly recommended if you are looking for off-the-beaten-path music.

  4. Re:Ever tried Borland on Extensible IDEs? · · Score: 1

Yes, Borland's IDE's are pretty good. I've used JBuilder and liked it pretty well. The problem is that it's too expensive and restrictive.

They've gone from v4 to v7 so quickly, that if you tried to keep up you'd be broke. (Have Borland ever heard of a minor release?) And you can't install more than one copy (say, on your desktop and laptop) without going against the license. That sucks.

Like I said in my earlier post, I've been using jEdit for Java development for a couple months now and I don't foresee ever switching back.

If there's something I don't like in jEdit, I change it. If there's something I need, there's probably a plugin for it. If there's not a plugin I can write one, or someone else will probably write one soon.

  5. Re:jEdit on Extensible IDEs? · · Score: 1

After fooling around with several expensive IDE's for years, I've been using jEdit for about 2 months now and it has become my IDE. And yes, it can handle serious projects with 300+ source files. I know because that's what I'm doing with it now.

One note though - I've only used it for Java. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work well for just about any language.

  6. How do you feel... on Ask David Korn About ksh And More · · Score: 2

about the fact that the band that bears your namesake sucks out loud?

  7. It's not fan vs corporation, it's musician v. corp on Napster Aftermath: Fan Vs. Corporate Rights · · Score: 1

The most interesting part of this whole thing is gonna be to see whether or not artists will be able to bypass major labels and still thrive. The rights of the artist trickle down to the fan. Those of us who know anything about major labels are seeing right through their "We're fighting for the artists" stance. It's plain bs. For great info on this go to the Future of Music

  8. IP == Intellectual Property on Senate Judiciary Committee On Digital Music · · Score: 4

Did anyone else catch that one Senator refer to IP addresses as "Intellectual Property" addresses (LOL), then go on to surmise that music pirates could be fingered through these same "IP" addresses. These people are running our country?

  9. It's just like processor power on Is Technology Killing Leisure Time? · · Score: 1

The more you have available, the more you exploit it for work. Let's face it, we live in a capitalistic, somewhat Darwinistic society where any gains in worker efficiency (through technology, for example) are just going to mean that we consequently raise the bar on productivity expectations.

  10. jeez on Microsoft Releases C# Language Reference · · Score: 1

Is this document the friggin' bible? I've never seen something get so literally dissected in my life. Need I remind that the language is nothing more than a spec at this point. Love it or hate it, it's too early to tell.
