The median hourly earnings of plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters were $19.31 in 2002. It would take a hell of a lot of hours to make $84K at that rate.
Fry's Electronics has refurbed Visor Deluxe for $120, and they seem to go on sale for $100 fairly frequently. That's getting pretty close to $80. I would guess other retailers have the same.
As their ticker symbol is LNUX, my guess is that most stock buyers out there think they are buying shares of Linux. The hopelessly uniformed and their money are soon parted...
I've used a product called GoGlobal by Graphon which seems to work pretty well. It is basically a thin X client for PC's. In my experience, applications run fairly well even over a slowish modem link, and over a LAN, they run like you were sitting at the server machine. They also have a Java version, which I have not tried. This would seem like a good solution. Develop the application on a unix machine, let people run it from any Java capabale client.
In the book "When Things Start to Think", one of the things the author, a proffesor in MIT's media lab, discusses Electronic Paper. His idea, and I think it is a good one, is that that paper technology, although old, still good. It is very portable, can be read from any angle and in various lighting conditions. Instead of getting rid of paper, he says, we should improve it. They are developing Electronic Paper. A sheet of paper will be covered in "toner", that is really a tiny capsule that contains two even smaller particles, a white one and a black one. When exposed to a magnetic field, the paricles flip, displaying either back or white. When something like this comes out, I think it could really change the way we use paper.

I did the google search mentioned in the article (site:xenu.net scientology) and got no DMCA warning - just the proper links to xenu.net.
