after reading lars comments i understand where he is coming from...
he and the band dose not want there work distrubuted freely on the net like it is... i understand that and will not download any metallica music .
but my entire reason for using mp3's is because i can not find a damn thing in the record stores !!
i go and look for a certain artist / song in the record store and after searching a hour or more what do i come up with ?? nothing but wasted time i can not find specific music at any record store unless it is on the billboard charts .
so i go to the internet and surf for a bit and bam im finding music that i like and specific bands and songs...
so what am i to do... change my intrests to the billboards charts and chase down every brittney spears release till her music dies and jump on to the next band wagon ??
that is exactly how the record/movie/videogame/insert industry here wants it .
as a consumer you have no rights to the media purchased except those granted to you via the liscense .
1. you have the right to enjoy this media on the orginal only you do not have the right to any duplications of this original .
2. you have the right to enjoy this media on equipment owned by you and enjoyed soley by you. you are not permitted to share this media with others unless they have also purchased a copy of the said media and have in there posseion at that time.
3. we have the right revoke any and all rights that are applied to this media with out warning or notice.
I agree to some extent that napster is being used largely for the illegal trading of copyrighted material...
But how many of those downloads are actual people trying to find new and intresting music to listen to ?
Radio only plays the same top 200 songs over and over and over again... the record stores only cary the most popular and better selling cd's consumers are only getting a small taste of what is out there to offer via traditional and legal means of distrubition.
so what has happened ? consumers have found that there is more to music than korn , backstreet boys britney spears, garth brooks , M&M , and(insert top mtv artist here)
so the mp3 format becomes widely popular because the consumer can find what they are looking for...
not what the record companies wants them to listen to... so a black/gray market has sprung up because there is a need that is not being fufilled...
and the record companies are to blind and to unwilling to try and fufill this need... what they want to do is ensure that any form of music that the consumers is exposed to has been paid for and counted...
they cant have the consumer listening to brangha beat or cuban dance music or zimbabwaian dance or what ever else a consumer may be exposed to via the mp3 format...
the consumer must be manipulated in to likeing brittney spears and the back street boys . and the same goes with the artist as well if they dont sound like nirviana or wail like whitney then they will not get picked up...
so americas music all sounds the same wether it be alternative, country, rock, or metal if it cant be labeled it must not be good enough for a label so it will be ignored.
so here we are faced with a decision... do we stick with the traditional method of music and be glad to hear the (insert the current billboard top 10 artist here ) for the 50 th time in 3 days.. or do we move on to a medium that gives the consumers what they want ?
its not about disrespecting the artist its about ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE!!
and the consumer is moving in that direction we are tired of the same crap being forced down our throats we want variety we want excitement we want music that captures the vibrant energy of the world not some corporate remix of the same sounds of the last 20 years...
it also runs mame rather well too as well as a couple other emu's... so any unix app that you might have should be easy to port if you have the know how....

what if China really dose invade Taiwan and the USA has a president who is committed to protecting Taiwan. so therefore military intervention is taken against China. to expel their forces from Taiwan . would be it not be expected to see some come of retaliation against the USA from China ? or would it be a localized war just in Taiwan.
one thing is for sure if this was to happen memory prices will go sky high... and you thought the earth quake was bad .
First I think a post titled "what dose it take" got a very important point across. the students have to want to learn before any learning can take place.
that being said America's education system is indeed in need of a overhaul. most other children in other countries are simultaneously taught both their native and the English language . I think this is a very important attribute to be teaching and do not see why America has not adopted the teaching of a second language to our nations youth.Waiting for high school and college is way to late .
Another thing is that kids who are really trying to learn but are having difficulties are generally passed over in favor of gifted children, where these gifted children are giving special attention, sperate classes and more advanced course of study . Where as the others are usually lumped into large classes and do not receive very much help in the course they are having trouble with, due to the teacher being swamped with the details of their job . These students tend to fall behind, if they are lucky and go to a good school they may be singled out and placed in a special class to help aid them . Although these classes seem to be the exception and not the rule.
Classes should be more interactive with a attitude towards a hands on approach to learning you can have students read and fill in the answers to worksheets all year long but nothing reinforces what you have learned more than applying the skills to real world activities . Other wise its all abstract to the students and thus of lesser importance.
I know this is controversial and difficult to implement . but course books need to be updated every year no school kid should have a school book that is 5 years old .
also night schools should be implemented for adults so they can easily continue and or enhance their basic skills . The cost of such a program should not be prohibitive to those with little or no income and there should be as little red tape as possible .
The funding of such programs are expensive and of course there is always the arguments of who is going to pay for these services. On one hand if we choose to ignore these problems we will end up paying for the damage done buy the resulting effects of this action .
On the other if all bickering is placed aside and funds are attributed to where they are needed all of those involved would benefit and it result in a better America "To live work and play.".

i think that these few lessons in life will get me real far if there is ever a war.... or i ever feel the need to go blow some people away who needs millitary and or police training when we have sims that install these fine qualities in to those that play them...
if it was not for the mp3 format trying to find that rare song or band would be near impossible. people dont seem to realize that not everyone listens to the same 15 songs on the radio... and for people trying to find music that they actually like is a daunting task.you cant just go into a cd store and ask for joe scmoes big bones band because they dont have it.. so what are you to do ?? hope a site like yours actually has a song or two of theres and information on how to get there cd and possibly fan literature...if it was up to the riaa this service would not even be in existance.
sure there are illegal mp3's out there... but what am i supposed to do ?? i want to go buy some music i heard in a club... it was made by x band so i go to the record store i want x band latest cd.... record store employee looks at me cluelessly... so i expliain to him the music and they point me to the club section of the store... i dig for three hours no xband not even on the myriad of compliation cds so i dig on the web still no xband... what do i have to do find something about xband ??? learn a second language . buy overseas mags find a overseas vinyl store who might have a clue what i am talking about... and finally get the damn lp that has the song.... when was it made 1990 something.. and im sure that this can applied to many MUSIC COLLECTORS the riaa dose not make music accessible to those off us that would purchase it... if it is not the in the top 100 it is cast aside to be abaondened the riaa dont care they want you be like everyone else so they can just rehash the same old trash over and over again and sell it for sky high prices... they could care less about the music collector... why do you think they have not aided in trying to keep classical music alive ??? its because classical dose not turn in the dollars as say the next flash in the pan big name glitz band... all the riaa is concerned about is losing the market share to a format that gives REAL MUSIC COLLECTORS a way of finding and archiving there perfered music... something that the riaa never even cared about... and still dont i gladly pay for music i enjoy... but dont expect me to go out and purchase you 20 dollar cd without letting me listen to it...and dont expect my bussiness if i cant find the artist and the song i am looking for.. cause if i have two peices of information artist name and song title i should be able to buy that song for my listening enjoyment... now tell me where has riaa filled that need ??

let me explain this to you..... go to search engine type in wedlock acidrain did you find the mp3 ??? no ?? ok lets try this altern 8 frequency still no luck huh ??? ok lets try back street boys...... oh my god look at the hits !! now lets go to your local record store cd shop what ever lets see if you find any wedlock or any altern 8 ?? what they never heard of them ???i wonder.... how about back street boys oh sure they have tons of that...
insert your hard to find little known group in those two spots above and you will see why its difficult to find the music you want....unless you dig hours and hours through sub culture mags and european, japanese, third world nation vinyl shops overseas record stores and you will see that your figures do not compare to the man hours saved by software like napster cause not everyone listens to backstreet boys
actually im not real sure how this could be a security threat to your machine since you only down load mp3 files and users download mp3 files from your machine..(although im no security expert) but i dont "belive there is away for a user to upload a file to your computer... the only way a possible security risk could be conceived is (again im no security expert here)by inserting malicious code in to the mp3 file (that you down load) and thus upon execution releasing its payload.... although from my understanding this would be highly unlikely... now things may get tricky if someone trys to crack the protocol and bypass whatever security systems napster uses to gain unathorized acess to a users computer but then again there is easier ways to go about this than trying to befuddle through a mess of someone elses code.... just my 2 cents form a 2 cents schmoe
i just wanted to say that the web is about the most useless place to find a particular song... usenet is good if you dont mind grab bagging "lets see whats been posted today "
ftp is good if you can find one that actually allows you access..
but napster beats them all... type in artist search 85% of the time you will get a hit... if the group is popular make that 98%
type in song name and boom more than likely there it is... you cant beat this sucker
i mean c'mon there is no technology (that i am aware of ) that can make a "exact" duplicate of the "actual film " we all know dvd is not a lossless format and the quality is not up to par of actual film. they should really focus more on other things...
i belive that the media industry wants to be the sole organization of purchasing media content . it seems when ever a new format is relesed dolby b, c, noise reduction type III tape vcr, dat, mini disc , cdr and now dvd they have a fit about these formats acting as a means to distrubte illegal version of the originals.
the media industry really wants to charge for duplicates they probably think you should pay a fee for each duplicate of the orginal you own . even though this duplicate is inferior in some aspect or another ie... a cd may be duplicated perfectly but will not have the actual cd art and jewl case pampletes as the orginal did.
i think that if the media industry could get away with it they would just ship a plain cd in a cheap plastic cover. and charge 25 - 50 dollars for it .
the media industry should be more concerned of staying ahead of "consumer" technology than preventing it we have had the same formats for over 10 - 30 years and now consumer tech is starting to catch up . and what has the media industry done??? they have done nothing . the biggest leap in movie tech (my recent memory) has been dss thx and dolby 5.1 ac and bigger movie screens
biggest leap in music has been the cd . or maybe q sound (see what i mean)
not really a giant leap from what we had 15 years ago. the media industry needs to get off its @ss and start inovating or they will soon be regarded to the same status as pulpfiction novels....(not knocking pulp btw)
this kinda stuff could make for a industry boom

I cant imagine the thinking that went into this treaty...
"it seems both our countries have the capabilities to take out ICBM's before they reach their target."
"that would mean our nukes would be ineffective,we both spent billions of dollars on these weapons and to have them shot down without delivering their payload would be a disappointment to either side."
"there fore we propose this treaty that would ban the use of ABM's to make a continental defense system this treaty would however provide applications to protect your home base and a ICBM silo. to ensure that you can still enjoy the launching and witnessing of your ballistic missile handy work "
I just don't understand why you would ban a defensive weapon system like this...

sure there are illegal mp3's out there ... ... it was made by x band so i go to the record store i want x band latest cd .... record store employee looks at me cluelessly ... so i expliain to him the music and they point me to the club section of the store... ... and finally get the damn lp that has the song.... when was it made 1990 something.. and im sure that this can applied to many MUSIC COLLECTORS the riaa dose not make music accessible to those off us that would purchase it ... if it is not the in the top 100 it is cast aside to be abaondened the riaa dont care they want you be like everyone else so they can just rehash the same old trash over and over again and sell it for sky high prices ... they could care less about the music collector... why do you think they have not aided in trying to keep classical music alive ??? its because classical dose not turn in the dollars as say the next flash in the pan big name glitz band... ... something that the riaa never even cared about... and still dont i gladly pay for music i enjoy... but dont expect me to go out and purchase you 20 dollar cd without letting me listen to it ...and dont expect my bussiness if i cant find the artist and the song i am looking for.. cause if i have two peices of information artist name and song title i should be able to buy that song for my listening enjoyment... now tell me where has riaa filled that need ??
but what am i supposed to do ?? i want to go buy some music i heard in a club
i dig for three hours no xband not even on the myriad of compliation cds so i dig on the web still no xband... what do i have to do find something about xband ??? learn a second language . buy overseas mags find a overseas vinyl store who might have a clue what i am talking about
all the riaa is concerned about is losing the market share to a format that gives REAL MUSIC COLLECTORS a way of finding and archiving there perfered music

let me explain this to you ..... ...... oh my god look at the hits !! ...
....unless you dig hours and hours through sub culture mags and european, japanese, third world nation vinyl shops overseas record stores and you will see that your figures do not compare to the man hours saved by software like napster cause not everyone listens to backstreet boys
go to search engine type in wedlock acidrain
did you find the mp3 ??? no ??
ok lets try this altern 8 frequency still no luck huh ???
ok lets try back street boys
now lets go to your local record store cd shop what ever lets see if you find any wedlock or any altern 8 ?? what they never heard of them ???i wonder.... how about back street boys oh sure they have tons of that
insert your hard to find little known group in those two spots above and you will see why its difficult to find the music you want

actually im not real sure how this could be a security threat to your machine since you only down load mp3 files and users download mp3 files from your machine..(although im no security expert) but i dont "belive there is away for a user to upload a file to your computer ... .... although from my understanding this would be highly unlikely ... now things may get tricky if someone trys to crack the protocol and bypass whatever security systems napster uses to gain unathorized acess to a users computer but then again there is easier ways to go about this than trying to befuddle through a mess of someone elses code.... just my 2 cents form a 2 cents schmoe
the only way a possible security risk could be conceived is (again im no security expert here)by inserting malicious code in to the mp3 file (that you down load) and thus upon execution releasing its payload

i just wanted to say that the web is about the most useless place to find a particular song ...
...
usenet is good if you dont mind grab bagging
"lets see whats been posted today "
ftp is good if you can find one that actually allows you access..
but napster beats them all... type in artist search 85% of the time you will get a hit
if the group is popular make that 98%
type in song name and boom more than likely there it is... you cant beat this sucker
now only if the riaa would lay off...

i mean c'mon there is no technology (that i am aware of ) that can make a "exact" duplicate of the "actual film " we all know dvd is not a lossless format and the quality is not up to par of actual film. they should really focus more on other things...
....(not knocking pulp btw)
i belive that the media industry wants to be the sole organization of purchasing media content .
it seems when ever a new format is relesed
dolby b, c, noise reduction type III tape vcr, dat, mini disc , cdr and now dvd they have a fit about these formats acting as a means to distrubte illegal version of the originals.
the media industry really wants to charge for duplicates they probably think you should pay a fee for each duplicate of the orginal you own .
even though this duplicate is inferior in some aspect or another ie... a cd may be duplicated perfectly but will not have the actual cd art and jewl case pampletes as the orginal did.
i think that if the media industry could get away with it they would just ship a plain cd in a cheap plastic cover. and charge 25 - 50 dollars for it .
the media industry should be more concerned of staying ahead of "consumer" technology than preventing it
we have had the same formats for over 10 - 30 years and now consumer tech is starting to catch up . and what has the media industry done???
they have done nothing . the biggest leap in movie tech (my recent memory) has been dss thx and dolby 5.1 ac and bigger movie screens
biggest leap in music has been the cd . or maybe q sound (see what i mean)
not really a giant leap from what we had 15 years ago. the media industry needs to get off its @ss
and start inovating or they will soon be regarded to the same status as pulpfiction novels
the surveillance industry is in for a big windfall as long as advances like these keep up. just imagine counter roboflies that seek out possible roboflies and destroys them on sight. we could have a miniature world war going on with surveillance counter surveillance tech like this . hmm I want the movie rights to this.
would it not make sense to have these deployed ?
...
."
,we both spent billions of dollars on these weapons and to have them shot down without delivering their payload would be a disappointment to either side."
...
I cant imagine the thinking that went into this treaty
"it seems both our countries have the capabilities to take out ICBM's before they reach their target
"that would mean our nukes would be ineffective
"there fore we propose this treaty that would ban the use of ABM's to make a continental defense system this treaty would however provide applications to protect your home base and a ICBM silo. to ensure that you can still enjoy the launching and witnessing of your ballistic missile handy work "
I just don't understand why you would ban a defensive weapon system like this
