even though they are only available to non-whites...
very sad when anything negative happening to non-whites is called racism, and makes them rich, while real racism and discrimination is not only tolerated but encouraged as long as the skin color of the victim is acceptable.
on my machine, windoze kicks the hell out of linux in boot time. Linux takes probably 4 or 5 times as long. Any way to shorten that would be much more welcomed by me.
will certainly help the users who are reluctant to switch to linux. better DX support will of course help windows games run under linux, especially as more and more games are DX based.
course, my site linux tribes (shameless plug) would love to see better DX support in wine so Tribes will run better.:)
ya, they say they are trying to prevent offline fraud, but I'd guess most people see the real motivation as trying to squeeze more pennies out of the customers.
but come on, charging someone more for selling to a non-winner? they already paid ebay for the auction in the first place, making them pay twice is beyond the call of business, I'd say.
And as the/. article says, the people who are going to be upset most by this are the power sellers, who probably make up a good chunk of ebay's business.
this is a bad idea in my book.
if the player is good, unless you can stream the media, and there is a good quality compressor available.
I hope it works well, cause I'd like to see quality video on linux as much as anyone. But unless people actually encode their videos with it, the technology won't matter, no matter how good it is.
not a flame, a fact. Too bad too. Some people like myself like downloading programs and trying them without needing to track down 150 libraries and spend a day and a half trying to compile something.
oh that's right, if you aren't a complete geek, you don't have any business using this OS.
shut down intel so that betty and goober can have 15,000 christmas lights on their house.
the problem isn't big companies, they aren't using more power than they usually do, and they are the ones who carry the brunt of the cost of running power plants.
penalize people who are wasting all the electricity on decorations before shutting down industry. People can find other less-wasteful ways to be creative for the holidays.
obviously this makes Linux look bad, and reinforces the misconceptions of it being a l337 h4x0r OS only.
If it was done by someone hoping to support linux, they certainly did a terrible job. If it was done by someone hoping to give Linux a black eye, (though an extremely small one) then they did.
This will be thousands of people's first exposure to "linux" and thanks to this, they will always associate it with being a virus of some type.
maybe they have been improved, but they have been around for a long time.
I remember very clearly back in elementary school when a one-armed man came to demonstrate for the class a robotic arm which responded to electrical signals to work the fingers, and also demonstrated a "hook" type arm operated by straps.
He told us we'd rather have the robotic arm if we needed one, because it would make us look like everyone else, and I remember thinking that I'd want it because it was cool, and seemed to be much more convenient.
I'm sure the effectiveness and appearance has come a long way since then, but for certain, the idea isn't new. Someday, we'll have true cyborg quality completely indistinguishable from the real thing.
I wonder if eventually far in the future, some people will have perfectly good hands or arms replaced for the added speed and strength of a robot equivalent.
they put the default option as programs they don't approve won't run... BUT, they give you an option to turn that off, knowing 90% of consumers run everything at the default settings, thereby causing any program not certified by them to be instantly useless.
They will probably start out with a "third" party (which they will own) verifying software, then after a while, switch it back to themselves.
Want to get rid of netscape? no problem, no need to refuse to disclose the critical api's they need, just don't sign off on their program. boom. Netscape is instantly out of business.
Does there really need to be a slashdot.org, slashdot.com slashdot.net slashdot.info slashdot.biz slashdot.name slashdot.pro slashdot.aero slashdot.coop and God knows whatever else?
Is this a transparent attempt for more cash as people will have to register not 3, but a large handful of domain names now to prevent their site from being taken advantage of?
Drop the tld altogether. I know it won't happen, but it would be nice to just go to a site by it's name, and when you find a name, just use it instead of every possible combination.
don't forget mozilla wouldn't exist without netscape, so don't go there.
there are starting to be some acceptable options, Konqueror and Opera aren't bad, but I'd guess 70% of my computing (maybe more? yikes) is probably related to web surfing, and I doubt I'm alone.
Sure, there are the insane people who insist you can see everything you need from lynx, but for the rest of us, Linux would be far less useful if Netscape didn't exist for it, and as much as we HATE to admit it, we'd be better off if the one browser which has bulldozed it's way to a userbase of what, 90% now, was available for us in linux.
instead of hooking it up to BLOCK images in email, why not take the reverse idea, and hook it up to a search engine. You could electronically index the web, rate quality, etc.
"They 'pirate' the games because there's no alternative way to get them, not because they're too cheap to pay for them."
There is some of both. Almost all of the people I know who are into classic gaming own more than one arcade cabinet, and even those are falling into conditions which are becoming increasingly difficult to repair.
It all comes down to your view on if they are actually preserving games which would otherwise be lost forever, or if you think they are stealing games... in this case from companies which no longer even exist.
