Well from what I read on CNN a number of the domains were things like "harrypottermovie.com" and were not infact fan sights but just a registered domain name to get money out of WB. There was no fan site here just a blank page.
Quite frankly WB is in the right here. This is not fair use its cybersquating.

I will admit I can be a bit of an evangalist for General Aviation haveing just got my pilot's licence. Would you be interested in learning to fly for real. Have you heard about the Young Eagles program (http://www.youngeagles.org) or the Civil air patrol?

I would be very careful about responding to this one. Remember most drugs are Illegal, and even beer is if you are 15. If you have used them talking about it on a web site with a readership as large as/. is not smart.
Remember anything you say here is public and therefore can come back to haunt you. The person who may be holding your college app in 3 years may be reading this right no.
Remember the 5th ammendment allows you to shoot yourself in the foot, it just says they can't force you too.

Ofcourse you are right. And ofcourse the Jewish community has used corrisponice to hold itself together for thousands of years. But E-only comminities are kind of shaky.

Ofcourse it is 0% so its kind of a non issue. Actualy About 2 miles from my flat is the Phessant Lane Mall which is huge because all the folks come up from Mass to get the no tax shopping.
(To give you an idea how close to the state line it is I think part of the parking lot is in Mass)

But to my mind the thing that I value most about a community is sitting around after a meal with real people and talking. Yes you can chat online but its just not as much fun. It is a wonderful fealing when you see someone who you have not seen in a long time. Online less so.
I personaly think we need to spend more time working on physical communities than virtual ones.

No they don't have huge armies but they do have thugs, and in several cases over the last 5 years those thugs have done a lot of nasty things to people.
Is that I feal like I'm moving in a real place. You know that JRRT knew what was on the other side of that hill or under that mountin. He may not tell you in the book but he knew. To many SF and fantasy books have felt like a movie set where if you went past that wall there would be a grey nothing.
To be fair I feal the same way about Terry Pratchet's Diskworld and the Harry Potter books. In both cases I feal that they author has a lot more vision than we see in print. (OK its not quite the same but I like all 3)

It should be noted that the rail companies have the same advantage, They have over the last 150 years setup the rights to put down track and telegraph and later telephone wires all over the place.

The 50,000 ft 999 mph thing is not much of a big deal with the exception of Concorde there is no civilian jet that goes above 600mph and very few that fly at flight level 500 (50,000 ft) and all of those have lots of other nav systems.

To my code there are times when it is. The Torah and the Rabbis tell us that it is permisable to kill in self deffense, but dictate that it should only be done when you belive that your life or that of another is at risk. So if someone is trying to steal your car it would probably not be alright to shoot at them.
In war it is generaly considered alright to shoot at other soldiers and military targets, but not civilians.

I would disagree with you. It is never moraly acceptable to commit murder, but not all killing is murder. It is to my mind acceptable to kill in self defence. It is also moral to kill in war (with some limits).
It should be pointed out that the commandment is
"Though shall not Murder" not "Though shall not kill".

Shure you can do that. But it would violate the OSD. The reason is that part of the freedom in Free software is that it should not restrict how you use it.
The more interesting question is how do you define "Kill people" for example if the US Army used a linux box as a mail server is it being used to kill people? I would say no.
I'm ignoring the moral issues of when is it moraly acceptable to kill someone and when is it not.

He said that assuming Alice is out of copyright that this licence is total BS and would hold about as much water as a fishing net. (OK the second part is my words)
On the other hand if you really want to read to your kids go down to your local used book store and pick up a paper copy for the dollar it would probably cost you for a used copy.

In an ideal world. The problem is that if if your a small company or one person with a web server out of your house and the person on the other side is a big company and they are suing you in a state court half way across the country etc. It is hard to even get to that point.
And this case is not even about infringing on a copyright.

Basicly the major differnece here is that the term "Fandom" has been in use for a long time. The Kleenex folks invented the word Klennex and therefore have some level of legitamacy when they say "Kleenex" is a brand name and the generic term should be used. Fandom.com does not have any such grounds.

If you can figure out how to work overseas for a year or two do it. You will be glad. I spent 18 months living in London and had a blast. Yes I earned less than I would have had I stayed in Boston but it was an expierince that I would not trade. You learn alot about the world and yourself by living abroad. It may not make you a better engineer, but it will make you a better person
The view of a place you get by living there is so different than that which you get as a tourist.

Go to your library ask them, you will probably find that Library records are much harder to get at due to first ammendment protections. And a lot of libraries don't keep records after you return the book anyway. Just for such reasons. You may be able to find out how many people took out Harry Potter books, but not who.
