Actualy that did not happen, the King did not wear the Yellow star, he did do a hell of a lot to protect the Jews of Denmark and in 1943 the entire Jewish population of denmark (Except a very few) were smuggled over to Sweeden. A few hundred were deported to one of the camps. The Danish Gov put so much pressure on the Nazi's that they had to let the Red Cross into that camp to inspect it. All but about 50 survived the war.
When they got back to Denmark they found their houses and stores largly intact.
I View the people of Denmark as some of the greatest heros of the 20th century.

Ok with a record label you get a small amount per cd sold, but they do their best to make sure you sell as many as posible, so you at least make something.
On the other hand with MP3 a lot of people may download them, but you get nothing. A large number times 0 is still 0.
Again how does the band benifit?
The Cure of the ills of Democracy is more Democracy.
And how does downloading an MP3 support an artist?
It is great for the listener, but unless you go to a concert and buy a ticket its not supporting the artist. And quite frankly my favorite artist is Stan Rogers, and he is dead.
I think I am missing something here. But here is a fact, recording studio time costs money. That money has to come from somewhere. Where does it come from if we all download all the music we listen to? Please tell me I want to know.
The Cure of the ills of Democracy is more Democracy.
I listen to a lot of smaller bands, mostly folk and I'm woried about one thing. If the bands can't sell the CD's they have made. They won't make more. Somehow the bands have to have to have a way to make some money. Studio time is not free, and while it is miniscule to someone like Chuck D it is not to a lot of people who are figuring that they can sell 1,000 copies if they are lucky.
So where is the money to make these recordings?
The Band has to eat you know.

No this would not help you. The Windows 2000 Source is copyright to MS and you do not have the right to post it. Microsoft could since they created it but you could not without their OK.
The Same would apply to a letter someone wrote you or an essay or whatever. Freedom of Speach and the Press does not override copyright etc.

Does not make it wrong. There are many laws around the world far older than the Sherman Anti Trust act that I would not do without.
If you read some of the laws in the Torah, esp some of the ones about things like debt that most people don't pay much attention to and really think about them you will realize that many issue of the question "How do we treat our fellow people" have not changed in 4000 years or more.

So what is wrong with making money, they are a company. If they don't make money they can't pay the people who work for them, they can't keep the servers running etc. Hell they can't even pay the electric bill.

System 390 Mainframes are what big banks and stuff use. If your PC crashes you reboot, when the Mainframe that American Express uses to proccess transactions crashes a VP at IBM gets his ear chewed out. THEY are desinged for 99.999% (OR better uptime) Everything is redundent.
The only whey to get a bomb box on a 390 is to use Semtex (OK maybe not but you get the idea)
I'm kidding about the semtex folks!

The US Secret Service has a program to try and figure out what they could do to reduce inidents like Colimbine. They are talking to some of the people who have shot up schools etc.
But the interesting thing was that the Head of the Secret Service said that the Profiling programs do not work at all.
When I asked Sen. Bill Bradley about youth violence one of the things he said that would help was mentoring programs. Made sense to me.

Well first off if they are going broke a tax writeoff is not important, they are not making any profits, therefore they pay no corprate income tax.
As for why it takes money, you don't just put a satilite up and forget it, you have to have all sorts of ground support for it. Plus it has to hook into ground based phone systems etc. All that costs a lot of money, Hell if Iridium with VC etc could not make a go of this thing there is no way a bunch of amatures can.

Yes this works for a few bands. But most of the bands out there are *NOT* the Greatful Dead and do not have and never will have as large a faitfull following.
The truth of the matter is that it takes money to make music and that money has to come from somewhere, unless we want to go back to the time when the only music was what kings and princes felt like paying for.

And I like it a lot, I have a bunch of bills (Rent etc) that just autopay. I don't have to think about them at all. Is very nice, and the cost is about the same per bill as a stamp. (OK a few cents more).

I can think of several ways in which these may be Illegal.
First of all simply taking down a web site costs a company a huge amount, These web sites are the places where these companies conduct commerce. If they are not online they are loosing money.
Second, I can see this as being a form of Rackateering. I'm not sure how the law is written, but I can see them being hit under the RECO laws that were ment to hit the mob, They are using an interstate attack to stop a legit biz.
Third, Stock Fraud, Imagine that the people who did this took a short position on stock in Yahoo, then slamed the server, the stock goes down and they make a fortune. It does not take a big movement of the market to make (or lose) a lot of money for a lot of people. And this is definitly insider trading.
I'm sure the FBI and the DOJ will find a few others too. I hope they nail whomever did this one to the wall.
FOr the Millenium I would nominate the Telegraph and the Steam engine. Sure they are both mostly gone now, but they represented the first telecommunications and industrial trasportation developments.
The problem with these is that while they make it harder to trace where the message comes from they also make it harder to read, and thus less likly to be listened too.
I would imagine that If you looked at my/. posting history you could find some themes that would make it rather easy to identify a post as mine, even if my name was not on the top of each one.

There is an issue here that no one has noticed. To run a radio station costs money. You need space for the studio and to store Records or CD's. You need to pay the electric bill etc. These stations will not be selling adds. Which meens that you will need to find some organazation to underwrite you. For example a school or university, or maybe a community center or church type group. But you probably can look to drop 30-40K per year. And that is assuming all the people running the station are doing it without a paycheck.
On the other hand I would guess that if you have a group that wants to run a station finding the people may not be that hard.
When I was an undergrad I used to DJ for WBRS in Waltham Ma (http://www.wbrs.org) and we had a blast. But a few things to clear up.
It will cost you more than a few grand to setup a station. At least to do it right. You will nead All sorts of audio equipment and not the cheap stuff from Radio shack. But about 10 grand should do it, assuming that you don't have to pay for office space. Which is posible if you are being hosted by a University or other group.
Keeping a radio station going is a lot of work. At WBRS they run 24x7 on all volenteer labor. It can be a lot of fun but it can also be a major pain.
Small stations can do cool things. WBRS used to have live music from local bands on every week. And the only show in Yiddish in New England (They may still have them for all I know). And had a lot of other neet stuff.
The most important thing to get a microstation on the air is a group of very dedicated people. Because there is alot of work there. But good luck to all the folks who are going to try! I look forward to hearing the results on the radio.
You have to look at a fwe things. If your company is already public it is easer. Because you KNOW what the stock is worth now. It could go up or down in the next year but at least it will be worth something.
If you are at a startup (Like I am) you have a more complex problem. You have to evaluate several things:
1)How many shares am I offered. 2)How long will it take them to vest. (It is usualy over 4 years, with the first bunch after 1 year) 3)What is the option price. 4)What do I think they will be worth when the vest or at some point in the future.
For example I have a bunch of options in the company that I work for at $0.25 share. When we IPO I think that the stock will go to about $35 a share. So if it does that it gives me a large chunck of cash.
The other thing to know is that the earlier you join a company the greater the rist you are taking and the more options you should get. A friend of mine at the company was the 3rd person they hired and he has a *HELL* of a lot of shares. When we IPO he will probably be worth several million.
