  2. Compaq on Hardware Manufacturers that Actively Support Linux? · · Score: 3, Informative

I am in the process of bringing our brand new network on-line (8 new DL-360s) and Compaq has been extreamly helpful. All of the servers are running RH 7.2 (they were delivered with 7.1 installed) and we have run into several issues reguarding RAID, the LightsOut boards, etc. Compaq support for their hardware and software has been excellent. Not to mention several cool software things that came with the servers.

  3. Re:fallacies and good info on A DSL Co-op in Your Neighborhood? · · Score: 1

Hear, hear. I too am tired of all this pissing and moaning. My company gets our T1 service for 1150.00 a month (2 yr contract). At home, because I am not willing to pay 50.00 to 75.00 a month for internet access, I use dialup for 10.00 a month. If you people want lower prices for broadband, don't pay the higher rates. If your willing to pay higher rates, then get a real connection.

...I don't buy the argument about the docs being in english is a problem. In my experience the docs are many times confusing or hard to understand simply because they are written by someone whose primary language is not english. I have not yet had a problem finding help on the net when I don't "get" some aspect of the docs. I think that anyone using this argument is either ignorant, or thinks that I am.

  5. Memo to Microsoft on Microsoft Blames the Messengers · · Score: 1, Interesting

"It's high time the security community stopped providing the blueprints for building these weapons," Culp wrote in the essay. "And it's high time that computer users insisted that the security community live up to its obligation to protect them."

Microsoft, you still don't get it...

I'm a computer user and I do not think for one moment that it is the obligation of the security comunity to protect me. I do not pay them to protect me. I paid you for buggy unsecure software. These security holes are your responsibility.

  6. Contradiction... on Corel May Have A Buyer For Its Linux Division · · Score: 1

Perhaps it's my lack of understanding of marketingspeak, but the following quote, from the article sure seems to contradict itself:

"The desktop division has the potential to hinder the company's growth and needs to be spun off and allowed to expand outside the company," said Burney on January 23.

  7. What is Caldera's Motive? on Caldera to Open Part of UNIX Source · · Score: 1

I don't mean this to be interpeted as flamebait, but, if most of what is being released is of little real value (as michael seems to be implying) then Caldera's motive must be that they need some positive PR.

Granted, benchmarks are interesting and useful, but I don't see the value in releasing a bunch of code that has been replaced, other that to try and get a little positive press from the Open Source folks.

  8. Re:okay... on MS XP Drops Java Support · · Score: 1

I don't think it's a matter of how hard it is. M$ will not be able to kill Java this way. When I booted WinXP yesterday, I was notified of some critical update that needed to be installed. Along with the update was the JVM, so I installed them both without giving it any thought. Thats what the average user will do.

[Disclaimer: I only use XP because I have 50 users to support, who will probably be running it at some point.]

  9. I too, believe in keeping things simple... on Firewall + Censorware = Trouble · · Score: 2

Or firewall product shipped with a copy of CyberPatrol censorware which I did not install. Instead, I (every now and then) simply email everyone a copy of the proxy access logs. I don't read them, I have better and more interesting things to do than be a corporate censor. Must be working though, seems there is a great interest by the users in determining what the IP address of thier station is >:-)
