Oil companies are not allowed to earn half the profits of apple, coal companies are not allowed to operate, car companies can't make money... seems to me we have plenty of companies not making money doing something and perhaps that, we might be better off if someone did make money.
Perhaps the best way to accomodate IP longevity is to have a copyright property tax. So... if you hold the copyright to a work, you either pay the tax or put the work into the PD. That way, if something is genuinely valuable, like Lord of the Rings, then, it can still produce income and benefit the economy and be accessible through normal markets, but, the rest of the stuff won't be locked up, away from people's view, like old movies or books out of print.

I honestly think Vista is a better operating system on the desktop than Linux is, but I still love Linux more. Maybe its being able to fix up a blown up boot menu by editing a text file. Maybe its being able to stare at a bazillion boot messages and suddenly realize that a dodgey nvidia driver isn't loading and that's what's screwing up your X. Maybe its the happy installation process or maybe its the gratification that 64 bit linux has been running on your hardware for three years now going back to suse 10, and Vista still won't install 64 bit on that. Or perhaps its the builtin Latex, the better integrated graphics thumbnail viewers, and the better package installer and the better add / remove programs... but in my case it was the happy discovery that under Linux if you want to see more columns in your text display you can resize the window but in windows you have to do the stupid properties thing.
I like Vista in a lot of ways, and it is a lot of ways better than Linux, but its not better in -every- way and a lot of the ways where linux is better happen to be pretty important. 64 bit versus 32 bit, a text window (bash and gnome terminal) that doesn't suck, a file system that's maniacally organized... I like Vista more than Linux, but I'll never really love it the way I love Linux. It's just a better culture... like, the way I like American cars... and yeah, the LSx series of V8s are pretty damned good engines, and Linux is a pretty damned good operating system.

See, there are people, liberals ARE backstabbing the USA on the war and on the economy...and they've been successful enough to create this coup they are headed for in November.
