Good point - I hadn't thought of that. But can I initiate the session, or must I rely on someone else to do so? There are times when I need to initiate the shared session.

It completely depends on what you are trying to do. RDP doesn't allow you to remote control the target machine, VNC does. VNC lets me and a user discuss what they are doing right/wrong. RDP does everything in the background.

Same here. I'm in the market to buy some products like those sold by x10. Can anyone recommend some products like those nifty remote controllable devices sold by x10 (not just the cameras).

Here's something I'd like to hear the arm-chair sysadmins address.

I have personally seen service patches and hot fixes blue screen servers. I have a fear of installing Microsoft "fixes" on systems that are functioning - will they cause a blue screen when the inevitable reboot is required? Will they break an API my "turnkey" vendor relied on?

    I have two choices:

I can pro-actively install the service packs and hot fixes, causing (at best) some downtime or (at worst) an extended period of downtime thanks to unexpected side effects. If I am pro-active about fixes, I am viewed by departmental managers and users outside of IT as a bad guy, someone who is here to wreck their server. Oh, and don't tell me to test it before I apply it... you can install the same service pack on 50 boxes and only have it blue screen on one. I've SEEN this occur, so it is always a roll of the dice.

Choice #2 is to wait until the virus/trojan/whatever hits this department. Then I am the good guy for coming to the rescue.

What would YOU do?! I'd especially like to hear from seasoned sysadmins in both Microsoft and Unix camps - what approach do you take?

Thanks for potentially saving me some money - I'll have to check their website stats.

And I've heard reports that the hard drive included is usually louder than the fan on the Radeon card, so you might want to get quiet hard drive if it bothers you too much.

Good to know. I'll plan on a different hard drive, then. Do you know how loud the Radeon card is?

I face the same problem. Here's what I'm evaluating:

    1) Water cooled case from www.koolance.com

    2) Noise reducers from www.quietpc.com

    3) Apple Cube (no fans!!) maxed out with ram and use VirtualPC to run my x86 stuff. Emulating x86 games would suck.

Apple would be the quietest, but don't get an add-on video card that has fans (kinda defeats the purpose). After x years the hard drive will get louder, so plan on getting a different hard drive then.

A Cube with OSX, emulating x86... probably the most elegant solution.

I dunno which one to pursue, either.

That always sounds good at first. And the solution works great for you! Your co-workers start relying on your system. Then you leave the company for a much better position. Your department is now screwed because IT has no idea how to take on the beast that made total sense to you, but lacked documentation, corporate standards, etc.

Make sure you keep that in mind as you roll your own solution and it'll be much more accepted by those in IT.
