yep, i cant understand why newer versions of ubuntu are so slow and memmory greedy that cant even install in an old system (k6-ii with 128M on ram), while XP runs quite good.
Personally i recomend FreeBSD, is faster, cleaner and more free, or ReactOS;)
i have just replaced vista in my girlfriend's laptop (she doesn't know anything about linux) and she liked it greatly! only because it's pretty:)
the only software she uses is spss, which has both a version in linux and a gnu alternative. windows live mess can be replaced also with amsn.

i use freebsd on a laptop with a 500Mhz amd k6, 128M on RAM. it runs gnome, vlc and can even run winXP on qemu pretty acceptable
