  1. Re:Interesting on Men Playing as Women · · Score: 1

well, i'm one of those chaps who occasionally plays females in computer games (FPS, RPG, whatever) and back in the day when i played pen-and-paper RPGs i always played females.

when i played, i didn't play the character the way i thought girls should act. i played the character as the way i would act if i was a girl. i mean, i don't think girls ought to go around seducing every guard they come in contact with or wearing all black vinyl 24 hours a day (well... actually, the vinyl part maybe). i just wanted to go nuts, not have to worry about living up to masculinity while still being allowed to act "manly" if i wanted to. i mean, girls are allowed to shoot guns and be hardcore, but if you need a change of pace it's socially acceptable to put on a pretty dress and dance through a field of flowers.

i mean really... while girls in the real world have to struggle against the ignorance and pressure of an androcentric and fraternal society, girls in RPGs can do pretty much whatever the hell they want. the choice, dear RPGers, is obvious.

they are working in conjunction with NASA! NASA is forking out a million bucks a year for this project. i mean, sure the kids aren't being blasted out into space for 4 credits a term but still i think this qualifies as working together...

and PS, being an american college student myself i think it's safe to say that if schools started sending kids out in to space there'd be a HELL of a rush to get registered for those classes :) and i thought it was exciting to have a "trampoline" program here...

unfortunately, what all of us little slashdotters are attempting to combat here is an incredibly advanced case of an ages-old disease called "ignorance". this particular case has been the subject of much study by [gang of smarties] in recent years, and they had the following to say about the matter:

[smarties]: we regret to inform the general public that their beloved friend "movies and recordings" will not be with us for very long. it suffers from a case of ignorance unlike any we've ever seen: while normal ignorace is simply the absence of knowledge, movies and recordings seems to have a bizarre, omni-adaptable strain of the disease which makes it actually ignore anything and everything its twisted subconscious chooses to. the ignorance has taken over the brain; consciousness has given way to disregard.

thus, readers of slashdot be warned, nothing we say or do is ever going to make any difference: when you're talking to someone who doesn't want to listen, rarely does shouting at them make them more likely to pay attention. i hate to say it kiddies, but what this calls for is total. utter. destruction. of american mainstream culture.

well. maybe not, but that seems to be the best idea i can come up with (i'm not too impressed with the other solutions i've been presented with)...

  4. Re:I've already got it... on Phantom Menace Pre-Orders Available · · Score: 1

just about everybody has the [crumby] bootleg copy of the movie. that's not the point. the point is that it's being released now, without a DVD, so that we can all get ripped off.

but i suggest that instead of whining, you either buy the tape or don't. if you buy the tape, don't buy the DVD. if you don't buy the tape, wait for the DVD. don't encourage this kind of behavior by acting like little-mr(s)-good-consumer and buying both (and buying poorly made jar jar action figures for all the kids).

george lucas has obviously sold out. but the man and the movie are not one in the same, so don't think you're hurting his feelings by talking trash about his movie.

    okay kids.

it looks like some of us have gotten a little too excited by recent articles and controversy to remember one important fact: star wars.

obi-wan kenobi. does that name ring a bell? of course it does, more so than amazon.com does in my mind. so if you're sitting here dreading the purchase of this video for personal reasons, do yourself a favor and think "darth maul. darth maul. natalie portman in the largest dresses ever constructed," and you'll feel all better.

it's star wars. quit screwing around and order the movie (find a place to order it from that doesn't make you ill). you can complain on slashdot afterwards. "can articles be moderated as flamebait"??? who cares!!! did you not happen to see that this article had to do with STAR WARS?

    *shudder*

  6. Re:93 MB for a DEMO??? on Heroes of Might and Magic III Demo Released · · Score: 1

take it from a DSL kid-- while the difference seems great at first, it's still going to take a hell of a long time (especially if your lines suck as badly as mine).

personally, i'm going to go home and crack open my copy of warlords III: darklords rising and play that for awhile until i finish the download... once i get bored with that, i'll start going through my mp3s and deleting the adam sandler ones so i can make a little more room-- 93 megs is more than i can afford at this point, and the install is going to wreck me! once i'm done with that, i'll read some slashdot posts about this very subject for awhile... then i'll go kick around the frisbee... then i'll take the Citation out for a spin... then-- i'll finally be ready to install.

    YEAH!

Quantum physics gave us computers, among other things, but also enabled global thermonuclear war.

yes it did, but you have to remember that while so many thousands of people are checking their hotmail every day we still haven't seen a global thermonuclear war. nano-swat teams infiltrating people's brains and destroying certain parts seems less likely to me than atomic bombs dropping, so i consider it worth the risk to continue developing this technology... and other technologies, too. who knows what the next computer will be...?
