I don't think that any sort of portable computer could replace desktops, simply because of the price of the system and the cost of upgrades. This system costs £3,500... I'm not sure exactly how much that would be in American dollars (around $4,000?), but a similarly equipped desktop system would be about $1000 to $1500... also, I believe PCMCIA cards cost much more than PCI cards... It's definitely a great system if you have the money, but the average person wouldn't buy this to replace their desktop when they can get another desktop for less than half the price. Still, a very impressive system.
