here's mine: Mainsoft's PR department was a tad bored and 'accidentaly' thought a tiny project with Microsoft remotely related to UNIX meant porting all the WinAPI to Linux.

Your image of Islamic countries, of China, of Russia, are all formed by the media.
In the United States, England, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, the media is controlled, run, owned and MANIPULATED by the Jews. The Jewish are at war with the Muslims in the Middle East - which explains why the media would form such a harsh view of them. They are all deemed as terrorists, when the real terrorists are actually the Jewish people.
The US government, the US media, and the US people are all being held by the bootstraps by the Jewish. They make out China and the Middle East to be such dangerous plaecs - and it is true, they can be dangerous, but not as much as they are made out to be in the media.
If you haven't experienced something first hand, you shouldn't have the audacity to comment on it's nature. Because, contrary to popular western opinion, we are NOT immune to propoganda, and we don't have free speech at all.
So if I were you, I wouldn't be too concerned about the Iranians or the Iraqis censoring Newspapers, or the Internet, or killing innocent civilians, or dropping an Intercontinental Ballistic Missle in the middle of New York. Because Americans just have to learn they can't form their opinions of the world through the medias eyes. Wake up and see who controls the media, and how much they would want to get their opinion into the publics mind.
If you are interested, you can visit www.natall.com. It's an interesting website, and trust me it will open up your eyes. I don't agree with alot of what's said in it, but it has some very valid points that will make you think twice about watching the news on TV every night.
Please send me an e-mail if you disagree with any of my views. I would love to discuss it further with anyone.
Daniel.
PS. I AM NOT A RACIST! I am not speaking of Jews in general. There are bad people in all races. But in cases like this, you must generalise in order to take heed of the bigger picture.

India. A country where there is almost no middle class. Where most of it's 1 billion inhabitants are completely, well and truly, emphatically below the poverty line. A country where 5% of the population has 95% of the countries wealth. And look at what the government goes and spends it's money on. What a pathetic waste... just so the country can gain a little prestige and look better in comparison to Pakistan.
I know at least 10 slashdotters are going to e-mail me back and tell me I'm ignorant. So tell me why I'm ignorant, and will someone please explain to me how this is going to help the average Indian earning less a week than we spend on lunch everyday?
This makes me sick, because the exact same thing is happening in the United States, in China and in Russia. Just so the egotistical scientists can feel their years of study to get a phd is 'paying off'. And just so the little boys in parliament can feel good about their big toys. Now to me, that is the height of ignorance. Blasting a hunk of metal into space, at a cost of billions in order to satisy oneself, while millions are dying everyday.
But don't get me wrong. I'm a very scientific person, and I believe the things that have benefited mankind more than anything else in history are scientific discoveries. But what's the point of spending billions on these when they go to no practical use, except to satisfy some unfortunate individuals? Why don't we invest some money into scientific research that will truly be advantageous to everyone?

Come on Slashdot. I thought you guys were supposed to clear up speculation and rumours and stop them from flourishing. Now you slap a big huge subject line saying "END OF THE INTERNET".
I know you are trying to stimulate discussion, but image the hoopla this would cause if it were on the front page of a newspaper.
Think, now, seriously. How could any piece of hardware, any judges, juries, or courts decision kill the internet? Think of the thousands and thousands of companies that depend on it simply to survive. Think of the billions that would be lost. And think, seriously, would anyone in their right mind (even a laywer, a politician, or a greed-driven rock band) purposely destroy the internet?
There's just too much to loose, for everyone.
Comments? I'm sure there are some.:)

And YES! Before you all scream out and say, you are using CAPS and SHOUTING... I'll say YES! And I'll say it as loud as I can. I AM SHOUTING.
SHOUTING indicates anger, and if there were a stronger indication of anger, I would be using it, because SHOUTING cannot possibly express how ANGRY I FEEL RIGHT NOW.
WHY? Because I thought that people still had morals. I don't CARE whether you believe in GOD, but you should respect those who do. THIS IS PATHETIC! Why must we stoop to this level? WHAT IS STOPPING SOMEONE FROM REGISTERING sex.god!
This makes me want to throw up. I invite the internet community to have some morals, and sensitivity to those who have faith and hold the word God as sacred (yes, I still spell it with a capital G. SEE! I HAVE FAITH! ARE YOU JEALOUS?!). Reject this TLD or restrict it to religious institutions. And I invite, no, DARE, the moderators to moderate this message up so that everyone can see the sorry state of affairs that has befallen us...

Excellent observation. I have always tried to explain to many people that you can always have balance between religion and science in your life. I believe that science and religion don't conflict, rather, they complement each other.
This new "evidence" doesn't change that belief. I can still believe that a greater power created the universe - this evidence provides the answer to the means of that creation. If tomorrow, scientists confirm the Big Bang theory, that won't change my view of my faith. I will still go to church on Sundays, and still believe in the underlying messages of Genisis and the rest of the bible. I've always believed the story of Adam and Eve was simply a myth, a message, not a factual account. The big bang theory, and the many others, are much more credible and appealing to me, and alot of religious people. The evidence described in this story may bring us one step closer to the truth.
It's such a great feeling to have a sense of understanding within oneself about creation, the present, and the future. Acheive this and I guarantee you will feel much better about life and death.
Life's good:)

If the judge in this case rules against the defendant and establishes a precedent, it will have devestating long-reaching effects on the WWW as a whole.
Why be so dramatic I hear you ask? Well, if webmasters can't link to a specific page in a site, it will be a navigators nightmare. Average users will have a hard time finding what they are looking for if they are thrust onto the front page of a site.
Even slashdot will be greatly effected. In articles posted on slashdot, the author won't be able to link straight to the news story, rather they will have to link to msnbc.com, or cnn.com, or nytimes.com for example. Quite often, the news article is a few days old, and won't appear on the front page. Most articles discussed on slashdot aren't (in the webmasters eyes) front page worthy, so they place them in a subsection. And us./'ers will have to roam the sites and use the often inadequate search pages to find what was mentioned on slashdot.
Is this what we want for the already ailing web? My fear is that this judge has no idea what the implications of his judgement will be.
The United States, in my view, compared to Australia, is SO PARTISAN! Your elected officials listen to their constituents. In Australia, we elect a party, not a politician. The head of the party (the Prime Minister) says something, and all the members of the party listen. So, in effect, the PM holds such a great power over the country. For example, our PM introduced new tax laws. All the party members, elected of course, completely and automatically agreed with his bill despite the fact that so many people opposed it. Whereas, in the US, if a new bill is introduced, the elected official will gauge the opinion of her constituents before she votes. If her constituents hate it, she won't vote for it. She won't blindly follow her leader. It seems to me, everything is done for the people. This attitude is one I wish was adopted in Australia. The sheer thought of our MP's actually listening to us, (the ones who elect them and pay their income) makes me dizzy. I wish there was something I could do to stop this. Short of moving to the US, nothing. I'm only 16 so my opinion doesn't count anyway.
for us Australians. Our government is becoming a dictatorship. They pass laws whenever the hell they want - since nobody cares who votes for who anymore, both parties are totally pathetic.
The government knows that have a duopoly on the Australian people. Most people don't care who gets in so long as they keep on handing out the welfare checks. Nobody cares about important things: scientific research, computers, internet access, consumer rights.
So spare a thought for us Australians. We have no rights in this country, and it's getting worse. I can see this country, in 10-15 years going the way of most South American countries... a democracy to anarchy.
Anything short of banning the internet completely will never stop discussion that evolves on it, regardless of whether it's about pansies or xenaphobia. That's point number one.
Point number two: people have a right to free speech. Even trying to stop racist discussion on the internet constitutes, in my mind, stifling of free speech, which is one thing that the internet can guarantee to everyone.
I have posted a few comments on articles on this subject... stating that NASA money is a waste of money.
I'm starting to see though, the benefits. Let's just hope that NASA can get in touch with this thing and actually use it to improve our lives, and the lives of everyone on Earth, not just citizens of the USA.
Before this technology becomes mainstream, I think we should open the topic up to public discussion. Discussing it here is the first step. Do we want this technology to actually become part of our lives? Do we want people to know exactly where we are, when we have our mobile on?
Obviously there could be benefits. Using it for law enforcement and searching for missing people to name two. But that may be as far as it can go, without upsetting people. However, in my opinion, there would have to be strict laws to govern this technology. As we've seen with other technologies in the past, if put into the wrong hands it can be misused and abused.
I believe the topic needs to be extensively debated, both publically and in government circles, before it can become a tool we can all use.
Let me just say how pleased I am that once again, the United States is leading the way in finding better and more efficient means of connecting the civilised world.
Obviously it's to some monetary or strategic benefit of Nanovation to provide this 90 mil, but I am glad companies like this are leading the way.
I just hope this technology will find it's way overseas. Often, a new technology is developed in the US, Japan or in Europe, and it stops there.
A very large company taking control of your desktop and forcing you to use their applications?
And since you get an AOL "100 hours free!" CD with every magazine, software package, and ten with a computer you buy, then isn't that reminiscent of Microsoft's actions?
As far as I'm concerned they're exactly alike. AOL should be taught a lesson.
I can't believe that some people are actually considering this to be useful. I am having even more trouble comprehending the fact that people think that these advances are actually a GOOD thing (advances probably isn't the best word).
Why? Why must we play god or whatever you think made us in the first place? My argument is simple. It's not complicated. I haven't included any statistics or quoted any scientists. I might sound ignorant, but I just want to rule that out. I'm not ignorant just because I have a simple argument.
Do we really want to play around with our lives any longer? I mean, we've completely ruined our natural environment and wiped out countless species of animals. Do we want to wipe out ourselves as well?
Why THE HELL would we want to change our genetic makeup?
Some of the arguments for this type of research are: 1) We could cure some types of congenital disease. But do we really want to? As cruel as it may sound, what would happen if everyone on Earth died of old age? The picture in my head is that our already over-populated planet will be unable to sustain the sheer amount of it's inhabitants. But neither me, nor you, nor anybody on this Earth knows. 2) We could use the research to improve our lives. Create a perfect human. Why on Earth would we want to do that? Could we imagine a planet where everyone looks beautiful. Or even worse, with cloning, alot of people look EXACTLY the same? Do we really know what we're messing with here. Human character and individuality would dissapear. The world would become a very boring place.
Forget I said all that. Forget that I'm trying to change people's minds about this nonsense. Just remember one thing. I'm scared. Scared for my children, for my grandchildren, my friends and family. That's all.
I usually agree with you guys\girls on most topics discussed on Slashdot. But one thing I just don't seem to get is spending so much money on what I see as a second-rate priority.
Now I know that NASA has the ability to improve out lives through their research. And personally, if they discovered other life-forms in space, it would be pretty darn exciting. And I know that scientists and astronomers get this argument all the time, but I think are much more important issues facing us.
I mean, look at the problems we have here on Earth. In western countries, we don't realise how lucky we are. Why can't the government allocate more money to international aid rather than spending it on projects that seem, to me, and many other people, a waste of time? I know that I couldn't have done it myself (and I commend the great scientists and physicists that work for NASA), but wasn't that Polar Lander just the biggest screw up? I don't know how much it cost NASA, but I wouldn't be surprised if it had run into the billions.
I think the US government should allocate more NASA money to international aid, and the great scientists should be used to find cures for disease, and erradicate world hunger.
Let's fix up our planet before we ruin another one. And ask ourselves, "Is it really worth it?"
