    From the earlier post :

    And then the parent post:

    "I was at a job where we routinely threw Masters and PhD CS resumes in the trash. The candidates are completely worthless at real-world tasks and are so arrogant as to believe that they don't need to know about CSV files or FTP, regardless of what the other side of the transaction wants."

    So being lack of self-confidence or being over-confident will not land you a job. This is why the USA is going down.

    The only way to save this mess is tax credits and even affirmative action for those that have advanced degrees. Mandate that companies who do contract work to have at least x% of their workforce to have advanced degrees. Also ban H1-B program while we are on topic.

    exactly. Since I switched to CS for the doctorate after getting a masters in EE, the amount of time spend on work increases dramatically, every day including weekends I only get 5 hours sleep, compare to 7 while back in the EE program.

    Good. As a second generation Chinese American there are still people calling me Chink. And that was from some younger generation, contradicts what you see on 2008 presidential elections results ( about younger people more tolerant to people of different culture and/or different skin tones).

    Exactly. There is another way to say it if you want to look you are not doing it for your paycheck:

    "On my free time, I develop software on the application of social justice."

    That sentence alone, especially with the "social justice" moniker, buys the heart of many grad school admission committees.

    Good interviewers or hiring managers are even harder to find.

    HR people just look at your GPA nowadays. The little bootloaders/OS selector that I wrote back in 1999 for all my home computers does not count. Handful of CS:S mods does not count.

    I have a friend who showed an aimbot he wrote for a MMO and anti-cheat bypass he wrote for a certain online sports game, the interviewer just show him the door.

    These companies obviously can't see the value of "recreational programming" over "school projects".

    The state of Illinois has been delinquent on paying its subsidy to the University of Illinois system, causing the university not able to pay bills to its vendors. Further budget cuts are on the horizon.

    We here at UIC have tuition differential long time ago. Extra $1K per semester for Engineering is not new. The tuition waiver for graduate students does not cover differentials, and it has been a hot button issue for the grad labor union for a while.

    So that is one incentive where you should graduate ASAP. If you don't have student loans yet, you may want to use this interest-free cash flow to pay off your high-interest debt, or contribute to a tax-deferred account such as IRA or HSA.

    Or your professor may ask you to stay in their lab as a post-doc :)

    Either way, if you have sh*tload of federal student loans (private loans not included, and you should avoid them at all cost), after 10 years working in a public or non-profit sector, you get to discharge the remainder of your loans, as long as you paid your 120 monthly payment on time. (This is known as Public Service Loan Forgiveness. Non-profit orgs includes most private universities, for that matter.)

    I am sticking to computer science (learning sciences) for the same reason. Don't want that kind of life style and deal with those kind of people.

    If I want to make $ I will maintain my own investment portfolio for that purpose.

    Just use a car battery witht a reverse transformer. High portability, high performance and fraction of its cost (as compare with capacity, not per unit. Car batteries capacity per dollar is much greater than 9V batteries, as lead acid battery is cheaper than alkaline.)

    One of my friends got his $ frozen/confiscated just because there is a virus on their computer. Unless these sites willing to comply with regulations and all that, including paying their lobbyist to get it legal, it should be outlawed.

    Chinese educational system is similar --- "teaching to the test", "cramming", no extracurricular activities etc. All that differ is they have a much "efficient" government, and they direct all resources towards science and engineering, instead of other stuff such as humanities.

    USSR fell. But that give rise to BRICS. The decline in R&D is not a talent issue ( there is another topic not long ago here in /. about the high unemployment of PhDs), but of a financial issue. $$$ is tight everywhere, and scientific advancement is usually considered as a "vanity" rather than "necessity".
