If you could convince them to arrest you, you could take it up the courts as a protest...
If you've been paying attention to the DeCSS case at all, you would realize that depending on the courts to over turn these dumb-ass laws is a risky position to put yourself in. Fighting this after the fact is the wrong approach to take. For those states that haven't passed UCITA, we need to begin lobbying or State representatives and attorney generals. I've already contacted the my Michigan representatives, no response as of yet, and the Attorney General who only said they are still evaluating and are aware of the controversy surrounding it. So about the only thing we can do is let each of our representatives know how bad this law really is!

What cost really? After all, you could still use Netscape, Opera or any other browser on your system if you wanted to, so that argument seems unfair to me. And as for the integration of IE into the desktop, well it makes it all a hell of a lot easier for the average user, and there are a lot more of them than the/. "ivory tower" type, so their needs should come first to any company actually interested in what their customers want.
Yes, anybody can still use Netscape, Opera or whatever else. The problem is though, as you already pointed out, the average user doesn't know that. They will use whatever is put in front of them. So unless someone with more knowledge comes along and installs Netscape or whatever, the Average User will just use IE. So by your own arguments, you answer your own question!
Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
Sorry, I shouldn't even reply this, but reading your comment just made me laugh! I'm truely hoping your just trying to be funny here, otherwise that is really sad!

As for your Free press rant, I'm not sure of the relevance so I will leave that alone. Mostly because I agree with what you said, just not how you said it.
It is a fact that people in this world believe different things than you or I. We can all sit on our high horses and scream how wrong they are and they will suffer from their beliefs. Yet, I am afraid that is not a wise choice. What I suggest is believe what you want to and let believe what I want to. I may disagree with you and you with me, but so what? I'm not out their to try and change everybody to my way of thinking. Even if I could do that, I wouldn't, for the simple fact that the world become boring. There would no room for discussion on anything. No new view points would come about. You may be happy with this sort of thing, but not I.
Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
What you don't understand though, is that censorship does not give the results you think it does. You sensor your kids from drugs, alcohol, violence, sex, etc.. Which means your kids grow up being naive to the dangers/benefits of whatever. Exposing these things to your kids, they grow up educated about it and no longer curious as to what all the hoopla is all about. I'm sorry, censorship, while I suppose noble, is the absolute wrong way to go about achieving your end goals.
Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
I see a time when they will be used to distribute material that should not be allowed to propagate due to its dangerous nature - instructions on how to buy/make drugs, race hate manifestos, terrorist propaganda and anti-Christian diatribes. When this is the case, these tools will be harmful for the Internet in a way we haven't seen yet, and harmful for society as a whole as everything becomes more dependent on the net. ~~~~~~~ I was with you on most of what you said, until this part. I just can't agree with on this statement. Let's take your list one at a time..
1) instructions on how to buy/make drugs This information is already widely available on the internet as well as in libraries.
2) race hate manifestos Again, this information is already widely available on the internet, libraries, flyers hanging in the supermarkets or on light posts or just about anywhere else.
3) terrorist propaganda Yet Again, this information is already widely available.
4) anti-Christian diatribes This one, I'm not sure I understand. Not everyone on the internet is Christian. In fact, not everyone on the internet believes in any sort of religion. So this argument is just not valid.
None of these things will cause any more damage then they have in the past. It's time people wake and up and realize that not everyone in the world believes the same thing as everyone else. The sooner people realize this, the sooner we can all get on with living our lives.
Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
I think you have the wrong idea of what the honeypots purpose is. From my understanding, the purpose is to find vulnerabilities in your system and then repair them. It is not to capture crackers. As others have pointed, that could be considered entrapment.

My existience is first priority over any warm fuzzies that I get from the earth. If I have a choice of doing something for the earth and allowing my life to go on I will always choose life and the ability to make a difference with what really counts our human race.
Your response proves my point. Thank you!

How are we making things better? With all the advancements in our technology, our environment is getting worse and worse for everyone and everything. We are doing more harm to ourselves in the long run, then we are doing "better".
Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
It's the same as the people who think things like cloning and genetic engineering are bad because it's "playing god".
I can't speak for anybody else, but for me, cloning and genetic engineering delve into areas that will only harm the planet in the long run. This planet is already over populated with humans. We, as humans, are constantly destroying our environment with deforestation, polution, etc. Nature has a way of dealing with this sort of thing. There was system of "checks and balances", so to speak, that kept species levels at an equalibrium. With the advancement of medicines, genetic engineering, etc, we humans have altered that system that will eventually lead to the end, unless of course, we can find another planet to live on before then.
AI, if used responsibly, can be a great thing. The problem comes when the AI computers that we created, become smarter than we. (Think Terminator and Matrix)
We are just going into the realm of the unknown. Where the consequences to these technologies aren't fully understood. Of course, most people only think about themselves and the amount of money they can make off the technology, so of course, this whole argument is meaningless.
Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
What exactley do you mean by disruptive? The MPAA can claim that DeCSS is disruptive to them making money. The same for Matell and cpHack. Unless a very descriptive definition is given, disruptive is much to broad a term to use.
Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
Your analogy is false, because you are not buying a car, you are stealing a car.
Sorry, but I think your analogy is wrong. Nothing is stolen with either cpHack or DeCSS. cpHack allows those who already purchased the product to see exactley what's being blocked. I don't know your definition of stealing, but in my book, that is not stealing. DeCSS allows legally purchased DVDs to be viewed on the OS of the users choice. Again, no stealing is involved.

You might want to try and locate one the local LUG(Linux User Groups) in your area and join their mail list. You will most likely get better responses for those types of questions there, then would on places like Slashdot!

You seem to forget that each of the things you mentioned, you have the right to take each of them apart and figure out how they work. You also have the right to use that information and build your own Oven, VCR,PC, Automobile, etc. Why settle for any less in the software that you use?
Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
The question is not weather or not they integrated the product, but rather what is their reason behind it? In most cases MS integrated for the direct purpose of forcing others to either sell or go out of business.
Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
How can that be a bad practice? No one is forcing these companies to sell. They sell because it's their right to sell.
You forget that companies that didn't sell to MS were run into the ground by MS developing the same product and then "integrating" it into Windows. Examples that come to mind are IE and Media player. I'm sure there are many others that I can't thing of right now.

That's what we have fraud protection for. Consumer protection prevents law breakers from totally wiping you out when you don't want to. If you take the ideas that many of the people here everything will be monitered and tracked. If that happens it will make law breakers especially vulnerable to capture and arrest. Cryptography ill be rendered moot and the government dosn't matter in areas of commercial interest as I illustrate below.
Way to take control of protecting yourself!
Unless over 50% of the people in the US are managers of something and have such data then there is no problem. Usually such data is secured on machines that are physically located within a building or in a system that is essentially secure to begin with. You would have to have a group of terrorists or militia groups to break through some buildings.
Most companies, brick & morter, have cleaning crews which have full access to the building and computers, therein. Your arguement doesn't hold water.
Since the government can basically do what it wants because it makes the rules protecting your data from the government is pointless unless you want to try to escape the problem. The government dosn't want to or does not actually engage in commercial or industrial espionage because it has essentially nothing to gain.
Just because the government thinks they can do whatever they want, doesn't mean we have to sit back and let them. The attitude you take is a rather scary one. It's attitudes like that, that tell the government/corporations that they can do whatever the hell they want to. We, as individuals, need to take control of our own lives and not allow others to control us!
Nothing exists exept atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion.
The flaw in your logic lays in the fact that whatever OS an average user first most likely becomes their OS of choice. The average user finds Windows so easy to use because thats what they were first exposed to. OTOH, if Linux, or more generally, Unix, was their first exposure to computers and Windows then came along, chances are we wouldn't have MS were it they are. People will use whatever is thrown in front of them as long as they know of nothing else. They will learn to use it for what they need just as they did with Windows.

Section 1201(a)(2) of the Copyright Act, part of the DMCA, provides that: "No person shall . . . offer to the public, provide or otherwise traffic in any technology . . . that--- "(A) is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under [the Copyright Act];
This is the part of the DMCA which the MPAA filed under.
Defendants claim also to fall under Section 1201(f) of the statute, which provides that, notwithstanding Section 1201(a)(2)--- "a person who has lawfully obtained the right to use a copy of a computer program may circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a particular portion of that program for the sole purpose of identifying and analyzing those elements of the program that are necessary to achieve interoperability of an independently created computer program with other programs . . . to the extent that any such acts of identification and analysis do not constitute infringement under this title.''19
The Judge said responded with the following:
Finally, and most important, the legislative history makes it abundantly clear that Section 1201(f) permits reverse engineering of copyrighted computer programs only and does not authorize circumvention of technological systems that control access to other copyrighted works, such as movies.21 In consequence, the reverse engineering exception does not apply.
As someone above mentioned, even though DeCSS decrypts the DVD which holds a file which contains the actual "copyrighted works". This is an important distinction when dealing with the wording of the DMCA, IMO. It is important for the fact the a file is a computer program, much the same as MS Word document file, therefore, I believe, the Judges argument is flawed!

Does anyone remember a few months back when somebody got hold of Ford Motor Co. trade secrets and posted them on a web site. Ford of course took him to court to get an injunction. The injunction was NOT granted. Not sure of all the details, but I know the site was allowed to display the secrets! So my question is, why isn't this the same?

What I'm afraid of with Linux and commercialization is the fragmentation that will occur in the community. There will always be those in the Community that want to keep Linux as close to it's "roots" as possible and those that want to commercialize it. While I think the support the commercial companies have given us is a good thing, I don't think we should just lay back and pat ourselves on our backs. IMOH, I think it's important for the Community to get more organized in the projects that are undertaken. Personally, I'm all for leaving Windoze on the average users desktop. I would hate to see Linux dumbed down for the average user!
