  1. unconstitutional "convienience" on RIAA Litigation May Be Unconstitutional · · Score: 1

While I, too, am a little fuzzy on why this would effectively classify as a criminal law, I certainly hope the RIAA is finally put in its place. I'm afraid the constitutionality issue will not help, though. It seems to me that the Supreme Court usually decides what outcome it wants and then applies whatever backward, convoluted logic it can to justify their position (assuming they don't just refuse to hear the case). The speeding analogy was really good though, wasn't it?

This is supposed to be a representative government, but how long have we been left wondering who, exactly, they were representing? Following these suggestions would bring about the transparency we need to help eliminate the (perceived) corruption and cronyism in our government. I suggest it be taken a step farther to help reduce the number of unwise laws that are passed. Let's have the sponsors of bills post them to a website where they can be reviewed by the public-at-large. Then every lawmaker who wants to amend the bill would post the amendment as a comment so that the public can see who is loading the bills down with what pork. I doubt it would take very long for the public to see exactly which politicians are screwing us and how. - That's transparency!

I rather think you would get a mix of personalities the same as anywhere. Sure, you would get some people with the need to be seen as smart, but many with that desire would avoid it for the same reason. After all, you'd probably also have some jerks making fun of the "moron" with the IQ of 130. On the other hand, there are plenty of smart people who sincerely enjoy the intellectual stimulation of interaction with other smart people. Where else would you find so many intellectual superiors to challenge you to improve your understanding of life, the universe, and everything? (well, besides /.)

For any home user on a budget or for short-term data backups, optical media is more than adequate (though it would be a pain to backup large amounts of data, I'm sure). Combine that with periodic backups to (an) external hard drive(s) and you have a simple solution that would work for many users without the expense of magnetic media. If you cycle the newer hard drives from previous external hard drive backups into the RAID array, wouldn't it decrease the chances of failures and/or read errors?

  5. Perhaps I'm missing something... on Exchanging Pictures To Generate Passwords · · Score: 2, Insightful

Using biometrics means the actual pics need not be exchanged, but would they have to be taken from the same angle? Also, wouldn't an app sophisticated enough to do this accurately tax the limited memory of most mobile devices? As to security, assuming the would-be eavesdropper could tell that the salt was biometrically derived AND both knew and had access to pics of the people communicating, why would they bother to go through the trouble of cracking the encryption just to find out that so-and-so was seen necking with what's-his-name at a party?
