Having co-wrote one of the NOS roundup articles for NWW in the past, I realized how quickly readers became very emotional over just the results (or a summary graph or table). The problem is management. We found out that there are an inordinate number of IT managers that decide policy based on the results of published reviews...many of whom never read the article - just the summary graph or scorecard as it appears the story submitter did.

Sadly I've seen many of the same types of IT mgmt. decisions and I do feel sorry for the techies in the trenches (which includes myself, at times, as a consultant) trying to convince mgmt. to consider the various technologies. It can be very tough.

Well, check out the information on the NWW Fusion web site regarding the members of the testing alliance. They are all independent test labs, not affiliated with any specific vendors. Each review includes a "How we did it" section which describes (in sometimes insane detail) of how the testing was performed. I work for one of the test labs. We survive solely based on credibility of the work performed. As does the magazine...

Source Safe, originally from One Tree Software, was designed to be cross platform. We used their original product to manage development across DEC Ultrix, OS/2 and MS Win.

Too bad Microsoft didn't see value in a cross-platform product...

And just how would you test "stability"? What applications running? Using what tools to stress them? Would it be fair for both OSs? How long would the test need to be run for meaningful results? Looking at only 'uptime' or something more?

Reality is that the only way to test stability is to replace boxes in a production setting and let them run for a lengthy period of time. That is generally far more resource intensive (not to mention disaster prone for a production system) than most can handle.

fvwm2 is by far one of the most keyboard friendly wm's available. Mapping keys to WM controls, to arbitrary commands and to specific windows.

IMHO, todays WM/desktops (while certainly making things easier for the Windows convert, which ISN'T a bad thing) has gotten away from some of the simple pleasures.

I gave up the mouse long ago...if you'll notice how much time you spend going back and forth from the keyboard to mouse and back, you'll see that your wasting a lot of motion, not to mention time out of your day.
