Fant says, "There's no clear signal to watch. Potential hackers don't know where to begin."

Don't you just have to look for the handshake signals instead?

Also, what are the implications of the "dual-rail" circuits -- doesn't this mean that you won't be able to fit as many transistors on the chip?

Let's say you do make RAM out of this stuff. Now let's say your box hangs so badly you must power it off. Would you want it to return to the same state? What mechanism could be used to reset the RAM?

This page shows that both Intel and AMD boards have 10-15% memory error rates. This seems pretty high to me -- is this typical? Why?

  7. Effects on spacecraft outside magnetosphere on Solar Flare May Produce Geomagnetic Storm · · Score: 1
A flare on Wednesday starting affecting SOHO, and WIND.

The high-energy particles cause bright points on CCDs. This affects things like star trackers and telescopes. Star trackers have a hard time differentiating between the particle hits and the real stars. The telescope images get "snow" in them.

Also, memory bits and other electronic switches can get flipped by impacts of high-energy particles.

disclaimer: I work for SOHO, but I don't speak for them, etc.

How did you plan on powering your snakes? Refueling them how, exactly? The local gas station? And how did you plan on getting them to the surface? You can't just "drop a bot" and expect it to survive the impact.

How about communication? How did you plan on getting data from the snakes? IANA RF engineer, but I would think you cant use a directional antenna because have no way of knowing where to point it. An omni might not even work, considering the composition of the atmosphere.

And here's a reason you can't take 10 years to get your data: funding. How did you plan on funding 10 years of operations of the orbiter? Here's another reason: What makes you think your orbiter will last 10 years?

The SOHO hotshots page has a description and some better movies of the event.

The TRACE spacecraft took some nice (but large) movies. Look here, here, and here.

This is offtopic, but if you want to learn more about how SOHO recovered, look here.
