we can??? Im not so sure about that, remember back a couple hundred years when they tried all that Utopia stuff? Capitalism should work if we could. Some people just have differnt levels of "nice". The reason america works so well is because everybody does whats best for themselves and that works out to be the best for the whole. (capitalism, democracy).
I am sick of hearing about people complain about everything about the election process.
Why do we have the electoral College. Why don't we use the internet Its so embarrassing seeing our election go so bad
Reality check people, if other countries went for 2 days without a leader, there would be bloodshed. Most countries change their leader via revolution. We are taking several days to figure out who our new president is.... So what??? We are still running fine (besides the pussies who are selling on the stock market). We will have a president eventually. Imagine the potential for corruption if we used electronic voting, whole new system would need to be developed, hacking, electronic fraud, computer crashes, OS compatibility, etc.. etc.. Some backcountry town in Alabama isn't ready for electronic voter submission.
Okay enough ranting and raving, my point is, its not perfect but is a hell of a lot better than most other countries could do, if you don't like it, then go change it and stop whining
Will everyone have equal access to new technologies, or will they become the property of corporate and social elites with specialized knowledge and lots of disposable income?
Lets look at some other countries. I have a big dilemma about whether to get a Palm 3 regular or color, and am I going to WAP enable my website. People in 3rd world countries have problems like, people with aids thinking they can cure themselves by having sex with a virgin, lack of food, plague. It is already with the social elites.
Perhaps we should require that before new technologies are licensed, deployed or sold, we need a technological impact statement.
I think that this is a GREAT idea. Not only in the tech sector but how about cloning, gene selection, abortion, etc etc. If we hade some law or code that established a set of ethics or rules before we unveiled a new technology, that would be a great way to ensure proper use of the technology. Is it feasible, no. I don't think so because other countries would develop the technology of our discoveries, people are not that patient, and we live in a CAPITALIST society. If it makes money then it survives, this idea would have to be a governmentally employed system, and then the gov. would be restricted the release of technology -not a good thing, to say the least!
I think that most of the questions that Katz presents could be solved/answered with open sourcing. Someone comes out with a new hard drive, release all the tech specs and let the public hack through it. The person could still retain copyright. This would make copyrights much more specific and not allow the huge vague copyrights that are plaguing us now.
I really wish Microsoft would quite creating programming languages, look at the monster they created for Visual Basic, or VBScript. Ughh I wish they would just use someone else's language to write their code in and not feel like they have to create some shitty "user friendly" language that is weak, useless, and widely accepted by them.
Lets see, Napster, load it up and it scans your hard drive for MP3's and shares them for the public to download, and it searches for only mp3's
Ebay, for example, puts no restrictions on what you sell or buy.
Personally I think this is a step in the right direction. How can companies be held responsible for the misuse of their products. Getting rid of naptster is not a solution, we will just go back to ftp or Gnutella or P2P.
If we start restricting what can and cant be sold over an independant enitity like ebay then full throttle net restrictions would start to take effect and the internet would lose what makes it so great.
I dont know about all you rich, have to have every new thing people. But how about something like this for good old TV???? I know I wouldnt mind every simpson's episode stored on my hard drive even if it looks shitty on my monitor.
Intel is banking on the P4 for the high performance desktop market. Most people just dont realize that intel also has memory market share(intel flash memory), networking market share, server/server processor market share, low cost and low power market share (strong arm/xscale). But I hope the number 4 doesnt hurt them offshore, that would be really detrimental.
You arent really supposed to buy one now.
Why? Because of several reasons
1)The chipset is quite large and it will be migrated down to the.13micron soon. 2)It potentially will reach speeds of 4Ghz, just wait for them to get it up to 1.8-2.0 and watch AMD fumble the ball. The P4 at 1.4 is only about as fast as a P3 at 1.1 anyway. 3)The Price obviously 4)Like the article said it doesnt support most memory types now, so when it does it will drastically improve performance. Why, because memory speed is the primary limiter for processor performance. Why do you think Intel tried to do that whole Rambus thing??? If you have fast memory it helps your processer out a lot.
Personally Im going to wait for someone to make a mobo that supports the 64bit Itanium, or two of them! then run BeOs -drool-.
In order to create wormholes, as any sci-fi fan knows, are essential for long distance travel, you need anti-gravity. Once we confirm the existance of Higgs Boson, will we be able to creat the anti-Higgs Boson. Looks like the first step in the right direction for interplanetary travel.
That is the key to "warp speed" if we can create anti-gravity then we can create wormholes, and if we ever figure out how to determine where we create our wormholes then we can travel light years away by taking a short path throught the wormhole.
How are they going to come in and investigate their piracy claims. I know we wouldnt let them in too redily. Also I *might* have a pirated copy of some software or some 30 day trial software on day 186, but I am about to buy the legal versions.
Are Companies Responsible for an individuals action????? or am I screwed all by myself?
Small powerfull particles exist in all the universes at the same time, forces (ie gravity) spread out among all dimensions (and universes) and thats why gravity is so week, the Higgs Boson would have to travel from universe to universe to make this true, which is what they think, all those wheelchair bound voice simulated physicists
The Higgs field is what gives everything mass, so without it there would be no mass. However this is not a confirmed entity. The Higgs Boson would be a result of this field and confirm its existence. The Higgs Boson would have 0 spin 0 electric charge and a mass greater than 78 GeV. Basically the Higgs Boson is responsible for giving other particles mass.
This whole florida thing has to be finished by Thursday according to an article on CNN. I wonder what this means because Im sure all the politicians will count and recount till then.
Any word on what happened in Missouri? Supposedly the democrats went in and got a judge to allow voting till 10pm then the republicans went in and got a judge to overrule that and allow voting till 8pm. But they still counted votes till 9:30!!! IF florida goes to Bush and Missouri (which is undecided based on this) goes to Gore then GORE wins! This is insane, you would think the great country of US would have a better system, and be more honest about it. your thoughts...
Ideally wouldnt we all have one unit of currency? This is a step in the right direction. Dont be so greedy, other countries dont have nearly the resources we do. and as far as $7 gas goes, we should be driving less anyway, it would take something like $7/liter to get masstransit and alternately fueled cars out to the market.
What is the big deal with these immigration laws that cause people to get all riled up?? I think this is a great bill, I personally know a lot of people without US citizenship that are very technically savy, (at least more than I am), programmers and engineers or whatnot. This will allow them to contribute to our economy and anyone who is contributing is good. Besides we are the cultural melting pot so we should take everyone.
We are too greedy with our resources as it is (some statistic about how much the average american spends/uses vs avg Asian). I say let them switch jobs, make us americans work harder, its not a free world, isnt that the idea of capitalism??
Politicians websites arent going to be the best source of information instead they are probably a source of influenced information that doesnt really pertain to the situtation. Look at political ads, you cant derive anything from them, and that is what their websites are. There are more idependant sources of information for political candidates. Block all of their websites.
Just because the release of 6 has some bugs doesnt mean they shouldnt release it. Get it out there, let the bugs be identified, let users evalutate it, Im sure they will release fixes and patches to all these bugs later. I think some of these netscape critics havent worked in a tense business situation before. Deadlines are important and hell they have to make some money to compete against the monster macrohard.
There is something similar called Mojonation that sets up a peer to peer network over the internet by using and granting resources to people. If you provide a resource, such as hard drive space, you get "mojo" if you use up a resource, you spend mojo.
It seems organized well and it promotes people providing resources and not just taking them. Also everything is encrypted and your files dont dissapear with time!
I havent tried it yet, but if you have then I would like to hear from you.
Intel just finished (within 2 months) a 3 year investigation and came out clean as a whistle, its not Intel's fault that the instruction emulation is slower and that intel can create a lower power chip. Transmeta has nothing to offer
Too bad Intel has low power faster chips already that dont emulate code. How about the xscale, or the low power P3 due to come out soon? I dont see why they are getting so much hype for a slower and more power demanding chip.
it was a simple 2D D&D world in which everyone was a small pixelated character but you could interact with people and fight monsters... I logged MASSIVE hours and it was extremely fun with pacman level graphics. I was thinking about developing another game just like this because with current computer power the number of people online in this world at one time could be HUGE.....
what do you think?

Maybe Im just too much of a pessimist.
