One reason why I would recommend him, is that he is not only a SciFi Writer, but wrote on almost every topic.
There are collections, that include not only scifi stories, but also essays on writing scifi stories (e.g. How important are the names of your characters and what influence has the choice of names on the reader). I guess this aspect can also be very interresting in the a lit class.
