    Your argument doesn't make any sense. You are basically suggesting that Microsoft should be forced to use Fraunhofer's codec and if they don't they are using monopolistic powers. It's their OS, they have no obligation to include ANY mp3 ripping software. In fact by ripping at 56kbps they are actually encouraging competition... if the OS allowed you to rip at 192kbps built-in they would put companies that make mp3 encoding software in serious trouble, it would be Netscape all over again.

    Hrmm, let's see, the algoritihim was designed by an extremely intelligent person and verified by other extremely intelligent persons whereas the average enduser is a total moron... so the answer to your question is obviously yes.

    The problem was that Florida has an incredibly outdated system. Here in Arizona we have an optical system which is extremely accurate and there is no dispute as to the intent of the voter. If the entire country were to use this system (as I'm sure some other states already do), there would be no problem.

    The irony behind this whole situation is that the regions are supposed to stop DVD piracy but what sort of pirate is not going to know how to modify their player to play all regions? Meanwhile people who actually buy DVDs and DVD players get screwed with higher prices and an unnecessary annoyance.

    I'm glad the government of a large country is starting to at least think about standing up to these media companies. We all know the US Congress is owned and paid for by these companies so don't expect any help from over here...
