  1. the portable crash on Microsoft Pits Pocket PC Against Palm · · Score: 1

    from C|net:

The bottom line: If you already love the Windows desktop and want to take your Windows apps on the road, give this OS a try. But be prepared for some crashes.

Are you tired of only being prone to crashes at your immobile workstation? Would you like Windows to fail you in a wider array of circumstances? Well you're in luck! Now you can crash on the go, without having to lug around that hefty laptop! Thank you, Microsoft!

  2. music? multiplayer action? on The World's Largest Game Of Tetris · · Score: 1

well, it's a start. if they were really hardcore, they'd set up some giant speakers and run the classic neverending tetris music at a ridiculous volume in the background.

and what about two player versus mode? building vs building? they should rig up the other side of this tower, or another one across campus, and get some serious multiplayer action going..

  3. Language on Ask Jordan Pollack About AI - Or Anything Else · · Score: 1
While it seems to me that we already have achieved something deserving the name AI (like H. Simon says), what most people imagine when they hear 'artificial intelligence' are machines which demonstrate really human-like intelligence. That means getting a computer to understand and use natural language and common sense (probably not unrelated things). Surely these are among the most difficult phenomena AI people face. I've always been skeptical of success in these areas, esp. considering the incredible complexities involoved in understanding the nature of language and language use. What's the state of the art in these areas? How much success is AI really meeting with implementing language? Any predictions?

    thanks.

  4. its gaming studies. on Fragna Cum Laude: A B.A. in Quake · · Score: 1

...the University of California at Irvine will start giving out B.A.'s in Quake.

okay, thats just wrong. yeah, the article's title is "How about a B.A. in Quake?" but it quickly goes on to clarify that the program is in 'gaming studies,' not quake. big surprise that MSNBC would twist the truth a bit to get you interested, but come on /., transcend.

as far as the program goes, it sounds like a great idea to me. we seem to support people who devote their whole lives to games in the physical world.. whats the big difference? what makes video games more/less important?

its just human creativity/imagination at work, nothing wrong with that.

  5. not exactly rigorous argument on Women CS Majors Declining · · Score: 1

Boys are wilder and more aggressive. So when there is computer time available, they will push the girls off. If teachers and parents don't do something about that, the girls won't fight back.

okay, this sounds a little far out to me. i'd certainly agree that boys tend to be more aggressive, but i've never ever seen that translate into "boys pushing girls off computers." access to the machines has, at least in my experience, always been equal. in fact, probably more equal than in the classroom: when students are interacting as a class, its pretty clear that male aggressiveness will have some impact on the confidence/performance/etc of the supposed less aggressive female students. but when the students are in front of screens, theyre primarily interacting with the machines, not each other. girls arent (at least directly) faced will their aggressive male counterparts. that seems to me a relatively liberating situation.

..of course, if girls tend to be more socially oriented, it would make sense that few are interested in hours of lonely hacking..

anyway, i didnt think Borg said anything interesting or new on this issue. probably the best thing ive read on it was this article on freshmeat. Seth
