The real reason IMHO is that we have over-regulated everything to the point that it's darn near impossible to accomplish anything cost effectively.
I live in an area with lots of trees, and storms. Line clearance used to be just cut the damn trees down. Then the tree huggers got all upset (which is insane most of the state is wooded). So the cost of line clearance tripled, and we now have trees with giant holes that the lines go through. Costs much, much more.
Cutting down trees is a dangerous job. So a few guys get hurt, and the power company has big money, so along come the ambulance chasers. The result is that the power company fired it's tree cutting staff. They contract it all out, to avoid the liability. So now we need a power company guy and a tree cutting guy on site, double the cost, half the line clearance budget. The tree cutters got together and formed a union, so no more competition, all the tree cutters charge really high prices, because, as everyone knows "Those evil power companies, they have all kinds of money, and so we should get more of it. They have SEPARATE PRICE for power company work.vs. everybody else. No kidding.
You want to run more lines? The EPA gets involved, the environmentalists get involved, the lawyers get involved... all these people cost money. So very few new lines are built, and the existing infrastructure is more and more loaded.
This is the story in darn near every industry today. And what are we doing? The feds, the states, the counties, and the cities are writing thousands and thousands of pages of new regulations every day. And the cost of everything just keeps going up and up and up, with reliability going down.
All this shit worked quite well before everyone started screaming "There ought to be a law"....
I respectfully disagree. It's not that outsourced programmers in other countries are horrible, it is that doing outsourcing RIGHT is a very, very hard thing to do, shaves far less off the budget than is advertised - although it does save money... Most companies suck at out sourcing, because they sucked at managing developers in the first place....
I know, I've been working with offshore developers for 15+ years. It's a global market, whether you like it or not...
I own a digital interactive development house. The number of starry-eyed, exceptionally bright, highly motivated people who walk in our offices, or contact us, or are found by our marketing nets that match you would really surprise you. Some of the advice here is very good, a fair amount of it comes from well intentioned people who clearly have zero actual experience doing this stuff.
The bad news. Based on what you've said, you're going to fail. Why? Because you're made the same mistake 3/4 of the people who come to our door with similar ideas make... You have devoted all kinds of effort to the product, and hardly any effort to the acquisition strategy - e.g. How are you going to find people to buy this thing? If you're budget for product development is $500,000 then your acquisition budget should be at least $500.000. Today's marketplace is not "Field of Dreams", if you build it, they will not come.
Second, give up on the idea of finding a VC or angel investor. The occasional news story where some guy got a million dollars to build his idea are the exception, not the rule. I've sat in many VC presentations, and watched many entrepreneurs burn out in search of elusive funding. VC's give money to startups with 1 - 2 year track record showing positive cash flow - and what you give up, in return, is control over the company. Self funding is the rule, consider all of that money to be at 100% risk. Don't mortgage your house, get a small business loan, or count on free money from the government unless you are willing to lose everything you have if it doesn't fly.
Third, most software houses don't survive of a single product because most things are cyclical. So think about a product + professional services customizing the product. Or the product being sold outright (licensed user) or a monthly subscription model.
Fourth, people who make a living writing helpful advice websites on how to start your small business and run it... make their living telling other people what to do, not actually doing it. Take their advice with a grain of salt. Seek out real entrepreneurs who have actual businesses. A good place to meet these folks are at M&A seminars if you don't know any.
Fifth, do you love the work so much you're willing to work 12 hours or more a day for two, three years? Are you willing to give up vacations? How do you feel about being on call 24x7 365?
The good news: You can do this. I am not the smartest guy in the room, nor do I possess any magical powers. I too, started out as a developer, worked my way up the ranks, and am now the owner of a successful software business. I haven't had a "real job" with a boss and a paycheck in a long time.
My one piece of advice: Learn how to build relationships with people based on respect and trust. Build as large of a network of such people as you possibly can. Because, at the end of the day, it is honest, trustworthy, decent employees and partners that will make or break a business. Good software is NOT about technology, tools, etc. it is about good working relationships between people
Hello Again. I see you don't speak the language of the country you are so knowledgeable about. I said Hello Comrade, and wished you pleasant dreams. It was a test to see if you actually knew anything about what you are talking about.
If you understood the post communist slavic cultures, and the language, you'd know that the whole concept of an opinion poll asking people how they feel about the government is a joke - no matter who is doing the polling. You're not realizing that in America, strangers are your friend until they prove that they are the enemy, whereas as many other parts of the world it is exactly the opposite.
Crimea is a tourist region, with the exception of the base in Sevastopol (and the monument to the Cold War in Balaklava) there's really nothing there of value. The Russians have killed the tourist trade, because you now need a Visa to get there. The reason it was so easy to take has nothing to do with the resident's desires to be part of Russia. Crimea has prided itself on being an autonomous region for a very long time. It was easy to take because the roads between Kyiv and Crimea are not very good, the train is a single set of tracks, Russia had a military contingent at the base in Sevastopol, they knew damn well that the Ukrainian Army could not get enough troops or equipment there to stop them, they knew that the USA is weak, and indecisive... Gazprom has wanted to control Ukraine for a very, very long time for obvious reasons. The difference between Gazprom, the Putin regime, and the Bratva is very slight - again, something outsiders don't understand.
How many times have you been there? You seem to know all about it. Are you talking to people there? How often? You should go. Every left leaning American should visit places that were under communist rule. You'll likely come back a conservative. It's one thing to be an arm chair socialist/Marxist, quite another to visit these places and talk to people who lived in a progressive utopia. You'll discover that we have it damn good in Western Society, damn good.
I suspect, given your immature little insults, that you're not very old, relatively intelligent, and somewhat full of yourself. The air of intellectual superiority - that comes through in your words - where the "poor and undereducated" are impugned to be too stupid to know what is good for them, and therefore people like yourself, who are intellectually superior and therefore have a right to lord over them... is wearing very thin with a lot of folks these days. You might want to check that. I was the same way when I was younger, I do understand what it's like...
So the Republicans are to blame for the 370 bills that Harry Reid refuses to bring to the floor, too? This whole blame thing, it's so complicated. I guess the Republicans "blocked" the ACA with their zero votes?
I am not an expert by any means but it seems to me that you have the whole Sunni-Shiite division - (that we blindly ignored in Iraq) plus Al-Queda which came out of the Afganistan debacle with the Russians. The Sunni's want absolute control and would murder all the Shiites if they could. The Shiites want absolute control and would murder all the Sunni's if they could. The Dictators (Assad, Saddam, etc.) they just want absolute control and power. Al-Queda, they say they want a Caliphate/Jihad but I suspect they want absolute control.
So at the end of the day it's the same old story, a bunch of people want to oppress others for their benefit and will tell any lie, and commit any crime to satisfy their greed. And there are deep seated racist divisions that make the racism in Western Society - that we get so upset over - pale by comparison.
I agree it has nothing to do with making the average American afraid. I also agree that people have given up a lot of freedom - in return for nothing - because the PTB's here want this power for themselves, and that this is a very, very dangerous precedent for everybody. Remember, it was the Democrats who howled and wailed about our freedoms being taken away by the evil Rethugnicans - and used this to get into power - and then promptly doubled down on every freedom attacking measure... And none of this will ever be repealed no matter what the politicians say or promise.
I think a lot of these people in Arabia have been taught to hate us because the leaders over there know that if people become Westernized - e.g. live in the kind of Arab consumerism society that exists in Saudi Arabia, or Qater, or other places -- that they won't get the absolute control they crave, and they will have to share the wealth with more people. You can't be a Sultan, with an army of peasants to earn your wealth, and a dozen or more cute girls to fuck whenever you want, plus the ability to simply kill off the ones you are tired of if your wives, and the peasants have the Internet, a car, washing machines, a TV... And that at the end of the day, that's what a lot of these guys really want.
So I am not vehemently disagreeing with you, Sir. Just pointing out that what these people SAY.vs. what they DO make me suspect of their intentions.
Again, if this were true, then why would Lois Lerner take the fifth? Why play games with the documents? Why loose the emails? Why lie, obfuscate, change the subject, and put up such a big fight? Why do any of these things?
Changing the subject doesn't answer the question. I don't give a crap about what resonates with what. I care very deeply about using the Federal Government to go after one's political enemies, whatever your cause is.
No, not at all. My point is that the idea that the Islamic Fundamentalists are mad at the U.S. are because "We are messing around with their country" is very naive.
They want to control people. They want absolute power. There are lots of these people out there in the world, some of them act real nice about it, some don't. I used Obama as an example as he is a poster child for someone who acts in his own self interest first, the party's self interest second, and what's good for the people (and in line with the polling data) third - if at all.
First rule of control - Get everyone mad and emotional against some enemy - and paint that enemy as much more horrible than they really are. Once people are all riled up, angry, and emotional they stop thinking clearly. This has worked since humans started forming groups....
Previt Tovarich Xest
I am old enough to remember when Nikita Kruschev won election with 99.99% of vote! And just like IRS, if Obama says there is not a smidgen or corruption then clearly it does not exist.
Spakoinai nochi. I will tell your FSB handlers you are to get extra bread ration.
Yep just like good leftists everywhere LOL Repeat the talking points, do not accept any dissent, refuse to discuss facts, and when pressured... punish.
You are correct, and it's far worse than this. Russian media regularly shows Ukrainians committing horrible crimes against Russians - all of which are fake.
Most folks in Russia don't believe anything they read in Pravda, or that is put out by Tass.
If they have a problem with it maybe they should vote Putin out next time and rise up if he refuses to go?
In the "election" in Crimea the voter shows up and faces guys with big guns. They take your name, and address, and you show ID. Then you vote - and write your name on the ballot. So they know exactly who voted, and what they voted for.
This is called a "Free and Open Election" by leftist thugs, socialists, and other such nice people. So the idea that the Russian people can simply vote Putin out of office and that they are "getting what they voted for" is, with all due respect, incredibly naive.
The real truth about Communism is that it was incredibly corrupt - even worse than Detroit . The difference between the mafia and the government is all but non existent. This didn't change when the Communist party lost it's grip on power, it just has a new name. The KGB became the FSB... You should get a visa and go visit there.
Thanks for this. And what doesn't make sense is that/. makes no CPI or CPC revenue so WTF do they care if a salacious piece of clickbait gets 800 replies?
Mr. Petry I generally agree with you but the current crop of leaders seem far too clueless to pull this off. The leadership has more leaks than a cheese grater, they can't even suppress a video of an intellectual being an elitist snob, let alone pull this off.
Most terrorist groups just want the US to stop messing around with their country and/or change the government of their country.
I respectfully disagree. There are lots of people in the world who strive to have absolute power over others, to exploit them so they can live lives of glorious avarice. They come in many forms with many names. Just look at the progressives in the U.S., who elect a leader who lives like a King at the taxpayers expense, with servants, dog walkers, and an entourage -- all the while proclaiming a deep love of the little people and the middle class (who are getting fucked more than ever). Look at despots and tyrants everywhere, they all want the same thing, but cloak it in different lies.
It all boils down to "I, with my supreme ego, are better than YOU and therefore deserve to lead you, squash you, take your wealth, and require you to service ME"
No facts to back this up, of course. But it's an awesome piece of agit-prop for the emotional. The scary part is that the same people who suck this nonsense up are the same ones who want to regulate speech!
So the report confirms an earlier study that "Happy Workers are More Productive" yet every day on/. I read how the evil corporations always exploit the workers, believe they are interchangeable cogs, wah, wah, wah oh boo hoo. And yet as a hiring manager I know that in fact, happy employees come from NOT fucking them over. Will this stop the propaganda? Nope.
And now, we learn that employees don't respect stupid bosses who don't know how to do their jobs. Imagine that! It's shocking!
As an ex-developer turned boss I can state several some facts here based on actual life experience (As opposed to ivory tower study):
The best developer makes a horrible boss. I know, I sucked at being a boss when I first got there because I was the hot shot developer
One can code. Or one can manage. But one cannot code and manage. It's fantasy. Even if you do get a fancy title like "Architect"
Developers mistakenly believe that management is easy, and their jobs are hard. Nothing could be further from the truth. Management is damn hard too.
The "Project Manager" role is one of the most stupid things organizations ever came up with. With the possible exception of flat organizational charts and matrix organizational structures.
Despite the thousands of books being written about management, most people suck at it until they have been at it for years. Funny thing, most junior programmers aren't as great as they think they are either, it takes years to develop good craft. So before you rant about your clueless boss, look in the mirror...
Thank You. I've had plenty of clueless, ignorant bosses and I have worked for companies that were astoundingly evil and corrupt. That's life! I've also had great bosses, and worked for great companies. The idea that "all corporations are evil" and "all bosses are exploitative" is just so damn naive and counterproductive...

Hello St0nerhat, very good advice from one software company owner to another, just gave similar advice...

Uh, the Democrats control the Senate and have a majority. The Republicans don't take over until 2015. Or are we already blaming them for everything?
