I would argue that proof of technological progress is:
1. Collaborating with multiple people from almost any given country on the planet simultaneously on the same project [internet]
2. Directions to virtually any destination without having to follow along with your finger on a map (not to mention real-time corrections should you change course) [gps]
However, innovation for these technologies developed long before such applications were conceived:
1. Militaries could coordinate attack/defense strategies in real-time [telegraph]
2. Being able to traverse the atlantic ocean on a boat [cartography]
So if we're talking about progress, we need to look at patterns in technology. Innovations on the other hand give us that big, mind-boggling leap forward. Those dont seem to happen as much since the niche previously reserved for the thinking-out-of-the-box inventors of the world has been replaced with an industry built around R&D.
Like most others here who have worked in a technical capacity most of their life, I have learned that my ability to communicate with people is much more valuable than my ability to communicate with a computer.
I look forward to a future where all computers have biometric equipment and project-natal-esque face recognition SO I NEVER NEED TO REMEMBER ANOTHER PASSWORD AGAIN!
ultimately we're doomed to be free on the road since driving is considered a privilege and not a right.
some day (soon even) we may be forced to upgrade our on-board GPS trackers during our next mandated smog test to continue having the "privilege" of driving.
dont want to be tracked? i heard the bus is still the preferred choice for anonymity
i hope they put a "no laptop" sign on the lavatory doors or at least add a section in the safety video before take off about eyes falling out or hair growing on your hands

Dear Mozilla.org,
I would like to introduce you to my good friend videolan.org who may have some people who can help you with your open source video project.
Yours truly,
Another Frustrated Web Developer
