    Are you one of those people under the weird assumption that you cannot put non-Apple purchased memory and hard drives into a Mac?
    I was. As, it would appear, is Winn Schwartau. And the last time time I used a Mac (a long long time ago, in IT years), it was true. You could put SCSI peripherals on it, but again that ruled out "Cheap".

    I did not know that. Thank you. His point is still wrong, of course, but for different reasons than I thought. (I still thought Macs were SCSI only, which shows what I know about Macs).

    Just the state of mind in which someone will produce an article that is as reasonable, balanced, fair and articulate as this one.

    Some Windows software applications are well written; others take shortcuts. : How is this different from Mac software?

    Memory Not all RAM is equal. Some works well. Cheap stuff doesn't. : Makes save you from this trouble by only allowing you to buy the expensive stuff

    Hard disks. Same problem: cheap or reliable. Your call. : Again, solved by Apple by not allowing "cheap".

    Windows is complex, trying to be everything to everyone. : Have you seen an Apple commercial recently? Or the "switch" ones?

    Why would an SCM company require two full-time developers just to support the source code of Linux?

    Or, indeed, any developers, other than to fix any bugs are revealed by using Linux as a free stress testing tool.

    That would be a pretty stupid reason for giving someone respect. Innocence By Association is just as stupid as Guilt By Association.
    Maybe, just maybe, he's an innovator who is looking to make a living off of innovating
    Cool, good luck to him. I'd be interested to find out how being as big an asshole as his worst critics, and taking every opportunity to demean the work of other programmers helps him out here.

    I'd also have liked it if he'd been honest enough to say "I'm an innovator, and I encourage Linux developers to use BitKeeper in order to boost their productivity and my business profile. But please bear in mind I reserve the right to take it continually change the licence conditions, and then take it away completely on a whim, and then give interviews slagging off Open Source at every opportunity."

    At least Linus and Bill Gates are relatively honest about their motivation being World Domination.

    A little bit of honesty goes a long way.

    Spoofing the air traffic control system in some fantastically improbably way might cause a few mid air collisions before the planes were grounded.
    If your air-traffic control computers are connected to the Internet, you've pretty much brought that disaster upon yourself.

    Well, duh. I don't want a bunch of self-proclaimed tech-elite pseudo-libertarian college boys to agree with me. Christ, the thought of succumbing to the world's most self-involved, self-righteous and least well-informed (outside of their own tiny domain of triviality) groupthink. I prefer thinking for myself, thanks.

    I'd rather proclaim my common humanity with the world than my superiority to it. When you grow up and enter the wider world, you'll either understand that, or continue to be a Republican. And if I lose some worthless "Karma" in the process, this is supposed to make me feel bad? Anyone who feels the need to smugly proclaim their superior intelligence and laugh at those they consider inferior is utterly beneath contempt.

    I guess its easy enough for them to port win2k to the power arch
    Given the modular VMS-like core that's at the heart of WinNT, I wouldn't be surprised if it was fairly easily ported to a lot of architectures. Then, as you say, if you only need a limited set of device drivers, you're well on your way to having a full OS.

    Nope. Pissing about with petrol has well defined, clear and apparent risks. Flying into an incredibly unstable country to profiteer as a representative of a hated army of occupation has well defined, clear and apparent risks.

    I question the intelligence of anyone who does either. I don't laugh at either of them.
