Ok, many of the hits I've seen have been from IIS servers that, given the following, are likely not even known to exist by those who _should_ know about them:

Under Construction
The site you were trying to reach does not currently have a default page. It may be in the process of being upgraded.
So how do these folks running these nimda-ravaged servers get clued in when they may not know they have a server running in the first place???
Just Usenet. The connection is great to the outside world hence my use of servers with better coverage, retention and level of service. I'm lucky enough to be able to afford the extra cost, but SBC [even pre-Prodigy] simply sucked when it came to news [I'm a Usenet junkie from way back].
As a DSL subscriber to SBC this is no great loss. The binary NG coverage was okay but the fact they cap download speeds at ~30K or so is the real insult; I'll continue to use outside news servers and never miss a beat [no pun inteneded].
Think PC Card hard-drives...very handy backup devices in a pinch and great sneaker-net tools as well.
What about the customers?

From the article:
"When we came up with the program, we wanted it to be what's best for retailers," Microsoft spokesman James Bernard said. "This is based on what retailers told us they wanted."
Usually we hear that retailers are doing something because "that's what the customers tell us they want". Apparently console buyers are now completely out of the loop.
Historical Reference : The notion of diminishing returns was first theorized by the British financier and pamphleteer David Ricardo while studying price theory.
And in an interesting twist of the space-time continuum, the builders of the pyramids were the first to put Ricardo's theory to the test.
God gawd but when will some of you
figure out that, in the above context, the
word is "than", not "then". Look around on
the Web and you'll see this all over. It's
like those who pronounce especially as "ekspecially".

If you need something to wear to the gallery, foondog sent us hats made of meat. If you think dandruff is an unhealthy food risk, Boolean sent us what might be the greatest meal ever. How can you resist a bowl of soup that morphs into a Ant is back with Mathamatical Oragami. If you need something to wear to the gallery, foondog sent us hats made of meat. How can you resit a bowl of soup that morphs into a Ant continues to submit quickies at a frenzied pace, like Mathamatical Origami.
>>>I thought that GPS units (or possibly the satellites themselves) were made to be just that little bit off so someone couldn't just borrow the electronics and hook them up to a missile for precision as they blow something to kingdom come. I'd hate for some terrorist to suddenly feel they had a round-about $100 missile targetting system.
Back in May of this year the US gov't. discontinued the use of a "scrambling" [known as selective availability, or SA] of the signals from the US GPS system. {The general thought was that, given that the Russians have their own system [GLONASS] up and running, the old line of thought about mucking up the system to foil terrorists went up in smoke.} A typical off-the-shelf $200 unit will now get you accuracies approaching 15' more times than not.
Gawd but I'd like to find the moron who created the "Punch the Monkey....." banner and hang him/her up by the short-hairs...many a site will never be darkened by my presence again because that annoying piece of tripe was in the rotation.
Hmmm...perhaps you were one of the lucky ones who paid the higher prices than that other guy and thusly avoided the spam...oh, Bozos stopped that awhile back? Never mind...
WTF is with using then in place of than anyways? For example..."lot more powerful then a Mac...", "...lot more powerful then easy...", "...from The Economist then Time...". So call me petty but this drives me up a wall, this sloppy spillover of lazy speech into written words.
XP=Xtra Profit
OT and screw the karma:
The market-droids have gotten to you. You didn't upgrade, you replaced. Big difference.
Semantics, sure, but this mind-set plays into the spew of the market-droids just a bit too much for comfort.

Donate to a local school; they can use the help.

Don't mind me...haven't had my caffeine yet.

Um, methinks the Cmdr is slipping a bit:

Bah...until my vote for Prez actually counts as a vote for him/her I'm out of this game.

More of the Tommy Hilfiger effect: pay top bucks so one can be a billboard for a product...no thanks!

Ok, that's much better. Thanks for playing!!!
Looks like kuro5hin is just a few hours away from coming back to lif; a countdown timer is now up and counting down toward Noon CDT. Cool...
