what if someone made a css-auth-generator in Perl. What about a Shakespeare-to-DeCSS-converter? Shakespeare can't be illegal, can it? (except in Texas, maybe) --
it's not splitting hairs. The GPL says (and I'm guessing that this is the reason) "no extra restrictions" and this is an extra
restriction.
Actually, I think it's the specific law of that state (Virginia?) that is incompatible with the GPL. I think it has something to do with the DMCA, but I just can't be bothered to check the facts myself. After all, this is/.;-) --
No, UT is actually quite easy to set up right now, if you already got nVidia's OpenGL-driver working. It may be something new with the Loki-distributed binaries, though. Anyway, I just executed the installer and chose OpenGL. It performs far better than Direct3d did on Win2000 w/o patches. I think that might have changed now; Direct3d is supposed to be more mature with the latest UT-patches for Windos than it's OGL-support - and the engine is the same on both platforms. But UT is very playable with my 2x570 Celly and TNT2U.
Just wanted to tell you that. Never thought I would discover new music on/. Yeah, I like Zappa too....:-)
That said, I think Napster is a bad channel for artists to break through. Most of the time I spend on Napster (very little time) I search for hard-to-find stuff like Einsturzende Neubauten's Hamletmaschine, which is hard to find there (but then it's also impossible to find in the local stores), most of my friends search for things they've heard - spelling mistakes aside, I don't think anybody searches for music they never heard about.
Of course, providing sourcecode for a game does not mean that you have to give the game away. Just think how much easier it would be if the only thing you had to do to get DooM ]I[ going on your new ARM-based NetBSD-box was a./configure and a make... No more waiting for ports that never show up at all.
Portability is the best reason I can see for opensourceing games. Hell, it's a good reason for open source in all sorts of SW.
What amazes me is that the MPAA had enough economic clout in Norway to have false charges filed and havethe police arrest him. An American organiozation having a Norwegian citizen arrest!. Does anyone fear that kind of reach?
Well; when the MPAA, or anyone else for that matter, press charges against someone, the police will have to investigate. What bothers me most, is not that the MPAA can press charges against a Norwegian citizen, but that the police lacks the tech knowledge to investigate properly:/ I don't think they know what this case is about at all.
Well, you forget that the cases that are relevant, in Jon's case, are cases in Norway. I don't know if you'll find 10,000 geeks that can read Norwegian (small country, you know:)) (But if there are, we could start distribuert.no)
A belated Y2K bug hit NSB december 31. The trains just would not start - not really unusual for Norwegian trains, but now the dumb fucks at NSB claims it has to do with Y2K. Here's a link for those of you who understand Norwegian.
Just look at this Wired story . I'm more than a little disappointed with Gail Zappa. :-(

blah, the site's been slashdotted already - anyone put up a mirror? :)
