We may be holding our own against these anti-privacy options, but what if there is another terrorist attack? I don't think we will be able to keep them from passing something that will severly limit our freedoms.

Although I would agree that Europe is ahead in mobile communications technology and TV and the like (as is Japan...those 3G phones are schweet) I would point out that they also have a lot of monopolies and pay a lot more for their services than we do. If the US had only one PCS technology deployed instead of 3 we probably wouldn't be so far behind...but then the prices also probably wouldn't be so low.

Maybe that was a typo, but I have rarely met an incompetent CCIE. However, when I see someone who has a line in his .sig that reads "MCSE+I, CCNA" then I puke.

But usually, anyone who can make it through that lab exam usually has their shite together.

  4. Dual Supervisors good. Dual MSFC bad. on Blow-by-Blow Account of the OSDN Outage · · Score: 1
The company that I work for has a pretty standard setup for any new cage: 2 6509s, with dual Sups with MSFC. We've bought 'em that way for as long as I've been here. I bought 'em that way when I was at my last company.

The dual sup part works great. If things are configured correctly then the primary sup config is copied to the backup sup, and if there is a failover then you still have the good config.

However, it don't work that way with MSFCs. If you have dual MSFCs in a chassis then the MSFC on the secondary card does NOT have the config of the primary MSFC. It's not a primary/secondary setup, it's more like having 2 completely separate routers. So if you have only one 6509 chassis and you have dual MSFCs but you didn't configure the 2nd one then you're h0zed. In our normal config we'd never notice...if one MSFC fails then the primary MSFC in the other chassis will take over (HSRP/VRRP being the handy thing that it is) and you swap out the bad hardware. But if you're someone that says "hey, I paid for 4 MSFCs, and dammit I want full redundancy" then be prepared for this tres funky 4-way HSRP setup. It's tasty.

And guess what...while our reseller was happy to sell us that config (2 chassis each with dual Sup/MSFC), Cisco does NOT recommend it. They recommend in our situation, 1 Sup2A/MSFC and 1 Sup2A WITHOUT MSFC per chassis. Go fig...

In most (all?) of Heinlein's book when the topic comes up it is o.k. - even great - for two females to get physical, but when two men do it's just wrong. A lot of straight white males seem to be fine with lesbians, but gay men just freak them out.

  6. Consider the author on Is There REALLY an IT Worker Shortage in the US? · · Score: 1
I went to UCD, and even took a class from Norm Matloff (154B - Architecture, I think) so here are a few observations:

It is not surpising that his definition of IT is programmers. To him, that is all that matters and all that CS people should be doing. He didn't really have much respect for what we would consider to be IT - weither it was the full-time staff sysadmins or the student admins who ran the systems the undergrads used.

He's also got a big thing about internships that shows up a little in the article. I worked for the CS department there for about two and half years as a student admin. I learned A LOT and the guys I worked with (both students and staff) were great. I already knew I wanted to be a sysadmin when I graduated. So for two summers I worked full-time doing the same thing I did part time during the year. That way I didn't have to loose my apartment or anything. Dr. Matloff told me on more than one occasion that I should take an internship in the valley, go into debt (because they don't pay you enough to pay rent in two places), and do some menial programming I didn't want to do, just because it would make me more employable than doing real sysadmin work even when I wanted to be a sysadmin.

Guess what - I had one of the top offers the quarter I graduated, and way better than anyone else in the CS dept. To do...you guessed it...sysadmin.

So I guess the main point I'm trying to make is that don't be confused...when Matloff says there is an IT shortage, he means PROGRAMMERS and not much else. I don't think he considers true IT to be a worthy profession. Who knows, that was back in '97, things could have changed...he might feel differently after his personal box has been slashdotted. :-)
