Because Linux will never be widely accepted or used in major corporations or businesses as it currently is. It boils down to the argument of OSS vs CSS: no legitimate, accountable support for the product and the absense of a profit motive. Linux isnt going to be maligned by this new flavor, in fact, its going to be enhanced by it. In addition, current Linux users are the most fertile ground to hoe when the beta testing begins. And if they can get people to suggest fixes to bugs as well as identifying them, so much the better.
One man is not going to bring Linux any closer to the forefront of worldwide perception. It will take the continuation of hard work and the imagination of the thousands of programmers like ESR that have gotten Linux where it is today. It has been said that flaming and negative feedback slows Linux' march to the top. I say that it's Linux' lack of a cohesive vision that keeps it where it is. Microsoft dominates because it has a vision, one motivated by greed and power, but a vision none the less. This is OSS's biggest and its greatest strength: its freedom. But what is freedom, if you don't go anywhere with it?
Its a big deal because slashdot is anti-Microsoft. As a matter of fact, anything that portrays Microsoft or Bill Gates in a negative light is considered newsworthy. Get used to seeing these articles, even though its clearly NOT "News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters" to anyone except a *nix zealot like Rob.
Everyone has their own romantic notion of what the World Wild Web is supposed to be like. Is it a community of love, silicon, and happiness? Is it a haven for perverts, vampires, and the obsessed? Its both. Such is the web, such are the individual sites. Jon: leave your feelings at home or don't bother posting personal things. Rob: either ban/censor the hate-ridden flames and throw the First Amendment out the window or simply tell those people who choose to post here to suck it up and endure.
These choices suck, but I know what I would choose for the betterment of things on this medium.
Bah..what is all the hype about mp3 anyway? Searching for mp3s leads you to nothing but pop up ads for porn sites, pleas for "Click this banner or my site promoting gratuitous sex and nothing related to music or mp3s will die!" or a page filled with really ugly background and text combinations. I don't see mp3 threatening anyone's bottom line nor do I people stop buying CD's because of it. As far as I have been able to determine, mp3s don't exist. Unless, of course, you count the indie music that no one cares to listen to anyway.
