  16. detecting B02K on cDc Charges MS w/ Distributing Cracker Software · · Score: 1

Does anyone know if B02K behaves the same way as BO did? Eg. by default, putting a registry setting in the RunOnce or RunOnceEx to start BO without a user noticing?

As a side note, I think it would have put cDc in a better light if they had included a method of detection as well. Of course that would fly in the face of this being a SA tool because every user knows how to scan a registry or check for remote administration tools.

  17. eg. paradigm on Home Sweet Sweatshop · · Score: 1

I'd have to blame the computer for all of this. Instant gratification is such an evil thing especially when its propagated to a large degree. For example: you press a button, the computer comes on, you and click, and you're downloading porn. Take this grossly over-simplified example and apply it to management and the people who make decisions and you get people who want their databases and online pc banking right now because "I'm sure it can be done. You know computers right?".
In addition, everything computer-related seems easier to deal with after hours when "normal" people have gone home and the resources arefreed up and no one is bothering you to change their screensaver. Late hours are the best work hours.
Late hours however are not equal to long hours. Its my opinion that 50 hour + work weeks for the computer-related fields will continue simply because they're accepted norms. Accepted by the people that work them and accepted by the people that make you work them. Perhaps there does need to be a high tech union on a nationwide scale.

  18. Re:... on Back Orifice 2000 on CNN.COM · · Score: 1

There are/were several sites that sprung up after BO's release claiming to rid your system of BO.
If BO is run with its defaults unchanged, the executable shows up in the Registry under the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce or RunServicesOnce or RonOnceEx. A more insidious user would change the default settings and most likely would not send you a pop-up stating he likes your porn collection.

  19. Re:Not a good thing on Back Orifice 2000 on CNN.COM · · Score: 1

The issue is not whether MS Win products have security holes; they do. It is a commonly accepted fact. The point is that by releasing Back Orifice and Back Orifice 2000, you're (cDc) opening up anyone unlucky enough to run an attached executable or any other method of delivery crackers may design to a complete loss of privacy and control of their computer to anyone who knows just enough.
Its one thing to code this from scratch, run it from a command line, and analyze packets etc. Its an entirely different issue to slap a GUI interface on it, make it self installing, completely user friendly, *and* make it completely hidden from the victim. Not anyone can code or decipher IP packets, but when its so easy to take control and access someone's computer, you're letting the wrong kind of people into the toybox.
Conclusion: BO and BO2000 will not hurt MS. MS will release a patch (maybe) and move on to another software product (definitely). BO and BO2000 will simply hurt the people who use MS.
Its my hope the cDc would release a BO and BO2000 "detector and eliminator" and copyright the hell out of it. This way you're not only exposing MS' security flaws, but you're also protecting the people who might be exploited by them.

I would say that Obi Wan didnt have to hide. At some point in the future movies as well as in this one, he failed in his duty. I imagine Darth Vader (the newly annointed destroyer of the Jedi) will recognize he faces a broken man and will leave him on Tatoonine to wallow in his failures.
As for Yoda, he ends up on a planet covered in life and he looks like one of the inhabitants. A search for him using probe droids or the force would have a low probability of success.

  25. Microsoft open sourcing anything on ESR/OSI's letter to Microsoft · · Score: 1

I think MS will open source some of its code and I'd be willing to bet they open WinNT 4 up.
Why? Because it would take years to start serious modification and improvement at the source level for WinNT. In addition, Win2000 would be out (maybe) and would be established by the time end users saw quantifiable reasons for trusting and using OS'd versions of WinNT. Besides, during the startup curve for changes and comprehension, MS would be watching and seeing what can be done to improve their Win2000 product that is based, I think, on WinNT to begin with.
