Manufacturers jump through hoops trying to figure out what cars will sell to the most people. They don't make decisions on which cars to make apart from considering the potential market. When you, me and everyone else on this forum go in and ask for a car AND then walk out when they don't have it, then they'll start making them. Not before. They aren't in business to set trends; they're in business to make a profit selling a product people want.
if by 'we' you mean humankind. By entrusting the furthering of space travel to government agencies, you are pretty much guaranteeing the launching of rhino's into space. You want a new, reusable and sensible launch vehicle? Take 500 million or a billion out of NASA's budget and offer it to the first team that put a crew of 4 (8?) up to the space station and back, and then again within 1 month of touchdown with no serious injuries and watch what happens.
When the state launches pioneers out into the unknown and they get killed, it's a state tragedy. When a pioneer launches out on his (or their) own and gets killed, he's a pioneer who died in pursuit of his dream.
Mostly likely he doesn't need to break in anyway. All he needs is cheap landline phone and screwdriver and he can call from the network interface outside your domecile..
My son did a science project and proved that (at the time) NiMH batteries in popular sizes paid for themselves and the charger in 3 cycles. If you're still using Alkaline or NiCD batteries you're truly ignorant.
I don't think there are any magic bullets. Software development (unlike most other engineering disciplines) is a build-it-yourself from the ground up everytime experience. Go read http://www.reciprocality.org/Reciprocality/r0/ (mentioned in the past on/.) to see a different view on what makes some folks way more productive than others.
Open source PVRs?

I'm surprised that given all the interest from the Open Source community that a OSS based PVR isn't being worked on? I looked on SourceForge and found OpenPVR, but it doesn't look to be moving (in any direction)..
I have two DSL experiences. Both are via ISP's. In the first (my home connection) I go through a small local phone company who also happens to be the parent company for my ISP. Their connection is stable and fast and has shown very little downtime. (I'm getting 768k SDSL for $39.95 / month.) The second case hasn't turned out as well. I helped an old friend setup a business DSL connection for the company where he's employed. Their connection has experienced at least 3 major (more than a couple of days) outages. Each time there has been plenty of finger pointing with an eventual resolution. Their cost is higher at about $80 / month for 160k SDSL....Kevin
Wahoo! I think that since plants are alive and can react to adverse environment, therefore implying pain response or 'thinking' of some kind, that vegetarians are immoral too! Dirt and rocks are the only suitable diet. No meat, no plants, no live thing of any kind to provide our sustinence!...Kevin
GPRS over GSM is coming to the US as well. I happen to work with a couple of guys that we liberated from AT&T. They, being architects of the CDPD data network currently in place, are in a position to know about these things. Also, the first whack at GPRS over GSM will be 128k. Next it will ramp up to 256k and so on.. It will take a while for us to catch up with the europeans due to the proponderence of different carrier formats for cellular traffic here in the states..

can you post a link to some folks that are working on this? I'd chip in if I knew more.
Wow. Too bad I don't have mod points today. I'd be giving you some insightful points.

I noticed there were some open positions at SCO. Maybe if you have the qualifications or are interested in a career, you should consider applying? ;-)

What does anyone care what the UN thinks? Last time I checked we (earthlings) hadn't yet agreed to global governance.
