Today, this comment is probably going to be moderated down, and that's to bad. But probably not unexpected. Two years ago, this comment wouldn't have been modded down, but two years ago it never would have needed to be posted.

Napster is not a website, it's a separate service that runs on entirely different TCP port. When I saw the words 'website' to describe it in Time magazine, I cringed. But, those people weren't expected to know that the web is different from the internet.

but slashdot was supposed to be different, it was supposed to be 'by geeks, for geeks', and yet, today, what do I see? The word "website" used to refer to the Napster service that you use to download songs from (I realize that napster does, indeed, have a website but that's obviously what the not what the poster was talking about). I mean, WTF? Of course, it wasn't Michael who wrote the words, but tyrann98. But would it have been so fucking hard to change the word 'website' to 'service'. I mean Christ, CmdrTaco mentioned using napster in some of the geeks in space episodes.

I've been becoming more and more disillusioned by slashdot in recent months, but this is the nail in the coffin (for me anyway). I can no longer expect any kind of technical validity from this page.

Ok, I said what I wanted to say. Now mod me down.

That's right, we shouldn't judge people on whether or not they have any basic understanding of geography. I mean, for some people it's hard to learn, thinking hurts! You're right, I'm sorry that I was so mean. The last thing I would want to do is hurt someone's feelings. It's much more important to know you're a good person then to know, well, anything at all. Never mind that Hong Kong is about as far away from Tokyo as London is from Berlin (geographically and culturally). Oops, I mean the distance from New York to Mexico City. You probably don't know much about that 'Europe' place (I hope you can deduce where Mexico City is - hint - it's not in New Mexico).

I said nothing about spelling or typing errors. But comments indicating true lack of mental ability deserve to be flamed. And flamed hard. If you don't think that being unaware of the fact that Hong-Kong action moves are not made in Japanese isn't unintelligent, then you have severely lacking standards.

The culture of Canada and the US is actually pretty similar. I mean, just looking at a Canadian, or talking to them, isn't going to tell you right away. ('aboot' notwithstanding). On the other hand, there is a huge difference between Hong Kong and Japan, and they don't speak the same language. And there's a difference between misguessing individuals and getting major things wrong. How would you feel if someone who knew you were Canadian asked you what it felt like to be governed by George W Bush. Or clamed that your country had been founded on slavery. Those are American things. And even if you can't tell what country someone is from you should know those differences.
