I don't know if this is the case everywhere, where I live you can usually rent the game at a Block Busters and see if the game was worth playing. Of course it meant you may not get the game the moment it was released but if you really had such an urge to do so, I'm sure you'd have thought it was worth playing anyway.
Although I suppose this is only true of console games and can't be said for PC games...
