  1. Reprinting the FUD: bad idea? on Stopping the FUD · · Score: 1

I looked over site in depth... I thought they gave a thorough representation of the facts and had some great ideas but something struck me:

Even though its there to refute FUD, this site is also one of the best collections of anti-Linux FUD out there. If someone was looking to support an anti-Linux stance (as opposed to becoming properly informed), this site is a major convenience. No need to do the research themselves, its all right there, including links to the original articles which they could report as sources.

I wonder if it might be better to take a more subtle approach by providing only the positive, factual anti-FUD, instead of repeating the myth/lie they're responding to.

It doesn't sound at all like they've lost it... from what they're saying (I'm watching it on Link TV here at NASA) they expected something like this to happen. The 12:39 time was just the first window they had, and something has probably triggered it to go into safe mode. It might even be a few days before they get anything... or it might be a few minutes from now...

  3. Re:Step in the right direction, but too small on Color PalmOS Devices Soon? · · Score: 1

No, you can't rate a system on raw power, but you can't rate it purely on the OS, either. Palms have a great OS, great software (if you can call 2-color GUI software at 160x160 great), but nowhere to go due to lack of hardware capabilities.

PsPC's have hardware thats literally orders of magnitude better in respect, great software (much of which simply isn't doable on Palms), but a mediocre OS (note that Linux is in the process of being ported). And they're not that heavy. The E-100 is 9 oz. while the Palm VII is 6.7 oz.

Plus there are PsPC's with screens that are easy to view in sunlight, e.g. the Compaq Aero 2150 and the HP Jornada 430se.

Anyway for my money the Casio E-100 was a clear winner.

  4. Re:Color on Color PalmOS Devices Soon? · · Score: 1

Everyone keeps saying color is useless on a palmtop, has no place there. This sounds like sour grapes I'm afraid, because the same argument (What do you need color for on a system thats intended for productivity?) could apply your workstation at your job. Yet whose boss would refuse to buy anything but monochrome these days? Wouldn't you complain loudly if they did?

Color is great for providing status information, making comparisons, making it easier to locate things by differentiating them more. With additional storage you can do things like carry around family or vacation photos to show wherever you go.

The rumors on power requirements for a color screen are greatly exaggerated. Yes, they use more power than monochrome, but maybe by a factor of two. And there are different types of color screens out there, including reflective types that look great outdoors.

  5. Step in the right direction, but too small on Color PalmOS Devices Soon? · · Score: 1

Wyvern class PsPC's have had 16 bit color since the Casio E-100 was released 5-6 months ago. At this rate how are Palms ever going to catch up to the current state of PsPC hardware?

  6. Clear and Present Danger on On Hollywood and the Portrayal of Computers · · Score: 1

This movie had the most realistic computer representation of any that I've seen. But even it was a little mixed up. I seem to remember everyone having Sun workstations on their desks with an MS-DOS interface... but at least it wasn't some hokey 2048 pt. font on a monitor that they talked to.

  7. MS does seem to have some tie with Gartner? on Gartner Slams Linux · · Score: 1

I just came across this horrendous MS propaganda page today (it may have appeared on /. in the past but if so I missed that one)... take a look at the links at the bottom.
