An Intel spokes-droid said today "Since we've utterly failed to compete with AMD, we've decided to set our sights lower. Transmeta, watch out! We're taking your nonexistant market share!"
Ok, first off AMD makes a hell of a chip but Intel has totally destroyed them! not only have they made a reasonably comparable chip that is twice as expensive but they used a novel thing called marketing. its this cool idea that makes people buy inferior and more expensive products. AMD and Transmeta can not compete with that yet and I believe intel is just trying to cover all its points....
just my 3 cents
I bet if you read the article you would have learned that you are right....
However even with their track record my bet is that Transmeta will lose a lot of their not-set-in-stone contracts to intel just because it is intel and everyone (read people who don't bash whats popular) knows it and will trust it more. The fact that AMD might be buying Transmeta will help them tremendously except for the bad name that AMD made for itsself with its k6-2 chips...
exactly.... Ive read that article(I think), and many others of its kind. The composition of lacquer and age is currently the "hottest" theory on how Strads rock. I still can't bring myself to pay the $1,000,000 + price tag for one yet.... maybe after I'm making more then 40k a year I'll think about it.
OK well you might know a few things about sword making (I know nothing of it) but I do have to say that you are totally off on the violin making aspect. Just so you know I'm not totally talking out of my ass, I've been playing violin for 18 years, teaching it for 6 and have played many a fine instrument; including a few Strads and some of the best modern violins made.
Though they might come close, any trained ear can tell them apart. Though no one doubts the quality of these fine new instruments Ageing is something that they have yet to replicate and therefore cannot compete with the sound of a 400-year-old Strad. Perhaps in 400 years these violins will compete and perhaps be better but not yet, not now, no how.
otherwise a very intresting post:)
If you read the article you would see that it just copys the raw audio onto the unit and then encodes it during downtime. This means that you can play it 2 minutes after you stick the cd in.
so if I can get it to reboot a computer then I can replace my tier I support group, let alone any telecom one!
come on Sony make it do something that is useful!
simple calculation
please tell me where I go wrong because Id like to see how it adds up
assuming 3000(pixels) x 2000(pixels) *32 bit color) and as not an expert in graphics I'm assuming that each pixel takes 4 bytes?
24 megs per frame
*24 frames per second
576 megs / second
* 3 2 hr movies (3* 120 minutes * 60 seconds)
12.4416 terrabytes for just the end production.
add models, textures, makes, scratch work and stuff and you will get really close to 100 tb
well we very well couild be.... according to http://www.doitnow.com/~smd/methane.htm and a bit of extrapilation for mars they could have had methane ice glacers and methane raid (titan supposively has that) millions of years ago
the poles themselfs are most probably methane but we will see for sure some time in the near geologic future.
Boycott would be a great idea!!! if they were bad but take a look at this diot.... he didn't doa parody he was making money hand over fist with adverstising for his missnames and so on! read before you decide to boycott geez
Ummm do you really want me to answer this?
Well lets see, he doesn't want someone to resell slashdot for a profit.
Someone tarnishs his name instead of just copying it.
To make a comparison Rob would be like lars if he went after every single ad remover and banned them and got legislation against them... do you see him doing that?
Seeing all the posts so far I see the question "why is anyone giving him this money?" or "what does BlackStar have to do with this?". This by far is one of the coolest things that I have seen on slashdot for a couple of weeks. Maybe people have seen stuff like this before but I haven't and coming from a long line of either Givers (read corp.america.com) and Takers (fund.needy.nonprofit.org), this is rather refreshing.
To all of you who think they are giving TONS of money, this is a pittance. I have solicited $100k worth of computers off of Dell in the last week or 2 and am working on a donation from Viewsonic. This, not as a Devlopment director but an IT administrator for a non profit.
Yes they are sort of apples and oranges so one last more ontopic report is that from a developers side this will lead to a lot of creativity. Why? because he is already paid for this year and unless he is a lazy bastard, he will be like an artist on retainer, without having to accomplish something for what he is paid, but therefor coming up with possibly new and exciting.
This has been around since the Roman times and people were paid to do this... only recently has there been a full industry devoted to making people look like shit.
Point 1:
Make illegal access, interception, and interference of computer systems or communications a criminal offense;
Okay, this is fair enough if it applies to governments as well as individuals.
err well.... ummm.... just by chance do you remember who decides what is illegal?
Yeah I know checks and balances but personally I'd rather that I would be able to snoop what the government is snooping on me then me just not being able to snoop and the government saying "we madea law therefore we can" blah well whatever
As we can't intercept traffic on our networks or have the equipment to do it how do we keep information? And I thought RIP was bad...
well we can intercept the traffic because they will make it legal we just will have to use the govs tools 'caus they never do anything illegal....EVER.
It doesn't work for everyone and if you need startup funds, trust me, age does help..... I don't bash anyone trying to start off on their own (Ive done it twice, each time with sucsess but nothing to write home to cnn about). but when I tried to get funding this year around.... march... it didn't work.... maybe its better now but if you have a great idea but need funding the age 23 is not the best to be.
well if you want to talk about opec, its your can of owrms. sure they get lots of money but their GNP is no where even close to a smidgen of ours. their reletivly few superelite are very wealthy and could probably fund 1/2 of this endever with their fortunes but they are no where close to where we are in terms of median wealth. In other words stop being a stupid shit and think about economics.
I thought russia was spending their money on oh.... say food? we are the only country that is really making oodles of money and we are not the only one making "stuff". ESA is also involved but why don't we just make America's richs 1% pay for it? hehe sorry jsut had to say that
Well its a bit late but I would still love some feedback on this observation. From what I can read both from the comments of the slashdot readers and his answers is one thing: HE WAS GONNA DIE ANYWAY.
Why you ask? Because the questions and the subject manner. Some people praise him that he answered with dignity to a full assault on his integrity. What does that mean? He is a polititian, not a techy. Perhaps a combination of both but from looking at his answers it seems more management thoughts and how to quell the throngs of slashdotters trying to kill him.
If I had these questions asked of me Id say "Fuck you" and slam the phone/email/reporter down. but basically anyone who accpeted this bomb is gonna have the fuse lit by us slashdotters. because no one who admires, respects or thinks like us would take this hellish assignment. So we got a wussy politian who didn't really answer any question that wasn't an attack and because they were mostly attacks he got by with answering 80% of the questions in a complete manner. Perhaps next time lets ask less attacking and more substatial questions. Please tell me if I did mess up but I do believe that a interview on this subject would never turn out any other way

I can see that drinking games in space will be oh so much more fun. Can we say Pac Man?
