looking at this I think while this might look with a tuxedo or black suit, Sony has more colors to choose from then black and white and where the hell is my chrome laptop anyway? if people want elegant go get a thinkpad, I want crome or something that I can go drip paint without worrying about ruining it. like a kids coloring book I want my multi thousand dollar coloring book.

Oh and by the way, if you can remove the multi and replace it with a sub that would really kick ass Sony... thanks in advance

As for my political views the only way they would become news worthy in todays Press would be TO KILL SOMEONE. and please tell me that you don't want that to happen. I mean it might give Katz a few more articles to write so no one really wants that. and since this is Slashdot, all monopolys are evil so why would I want to be a monopoly. So I.... for one am willing to do my part on the micro level. I will inform my family what the hell is going on and inform my non geek friends as well (all 4 of them). I will also do my part and tell my geek friends that they should do the same and that way, I will have effected 30 some people in a small way. its micro but I don't want to devote my life to politics just yet. so if I do this and every other REAL slashdotter does the same that would effect some 6 million people in some small way WHICH IS NOT MICRO! see how this works? its really simple :) If you think you don't count then of course you don't. but don't go beating other people saying that they don't count.

Exactly why does it need to be near the equator? is it just me or wouldn't the rotation of the earth on a tether that large be a real pain. either have a huge tensile strenght or rocksts almost contnually fireing to keep the top where it should be.

my suggestion: build it in antartica... find a stable base and build there then you only need to worry about the rotational pull to twist the tether.

Doppler happens with any motion. How do you think the nice traffic officer figures out how fast you're moving?
Correct in respect to Doppler but wrong in its application. A radar gun actually does not measure anything but Delta D over Delta T (change of distance over change of time). Granted it does this quickly but it does not use the doppler effect to measure the speed. For doppler to really become an issue I would think that you would really need to be traveling around 1/10000th the speed of light or even 1/100000th for something like this.
