  1. as it was and as it always shall be on The Virtue of Communal Instincts · · Score: 1
We as a community are approaching a point where the petty arguments over what OS, browser, e-mail program, etc. are fruitless and mean nothing.

Ever since the dawn of usenet there have always been the flamewares about these things. They were just as pointless back then as they are now. Every year, the newbies log on for the first time and go through the same, tired, motions. The only thing new about it is nowadays the newbies appear online every day, not just at the start of semester.
Perhaps one day we'll reach a point when people realise that these things are tools - Nothing more, nothing less. Then again, that will probably be the day that hell freezes over.

  2. yay! on DoubleClick Taken to Court · · Score: 3

Its about time those guys got taken down a peg or two. I've been filtering doubleclick out at my proxy server since I first noticed they were dropping cookies on each of their click-through ads. If you're after an easy way of blocking Doubleclick and others like them, check out Junkbusters They have filters for win95/98/nt and unix, as well as a generic faq on blocking cookies and banner ads.

  3. these are the apps on XMMS 1.0.0 Released · · Score: 3

Its this sort of application that is helping bring Linux to the mainstream. The office suites have been out for a little while now. The linux games are starting to sprout up all over the place, and now the multimedia and entertainment utilities are coming through as finished, professional products. Assuming we can get the MPAA off our backs about the CSS fiasco, we're well on the way to being a system that is not only good for the hackers, but useful for the end-user also.
