>An unfortunate side effect of high intelligence >is a remarkable lack of patience for lesser intelligences.
Thats not a side effect of high intelligence, thats a side effect of arrogance. A quality, that is all too evident in people who think that they have high intellect and that is all that they have. Personally I don't see what is so wrong with the idea and feel that if your (not you, but anyone) is going to shoot something down, at least provide a reason for it.
I guess you haven't heard of overclocking graphics cards. There are web pages devoted to it. Here are a few:
How to OC your video card
and
Another good one
and
Heatsinks for your video card
and
What to look for in an Overclockable video card
Also, many times, overclocking involves increasing bus speed, ala 66Mhz to 100Mhz, etc. The fact that you said that alone tells me you don't know very much about overclocking. You might want to read up on the various facets of overclocking, you might look at your computer in a totally different way.
P.S. Why is it ok for people to perform a software upgrade to get a 33Mhz IDE bus to run at 66Mhz (vendor approved, yes I am talking about the BP6 bios upgrades) but its not ok for people to change a setting or two in their bios? I bet all the people bitching about overclockers would download and install a patch to get more performance out of their computers if it came from a vendor but they are reluctent to try something on their own.
Hmm thats interesting, apparently when you hit "Reply to This", instead of your comment appearing below the statement you are replying to, it appears at the bottom. I was replying to be-fan in the previous post. (Just to clear any confusion) For richie123, thanks and I will investigate further. I have to have a better upgrade path before I commit to reiserFS
Well then what's the point of that? I have one of my boxes with an 80gig/home. If I were to run reiserfs, I would have to find another 80gig partition (if I had/home full, which I sooner or later would fill) copy all my/home over, install new version of reiserfs, reformat and then copy the backup/home over. Where I can do the same thing with a umount/home ; install new ext3 ; mount/home? Sorry, but I'll stick to ext3 at least until reiserfs has a better upgrade path.
Because ext3 allows one to migrate from and to ext2 without losing data. Also, perhaps you can answer this, can a user upgrade to future versions of reiserfs without reformatting, as the last time I looked at this, you could not upgrade without reformatting the partition. Also, ext3 has proven to be EXTREMELY stable for me.
You want to penalize someone for something they have said? Keep track of ip
addresses (their all anon cowards anyway) and penalize them for speaking their
mind and presenting another point of view (No matter how much you disagree) ? What
exactly makes you different from the police who siezed this kids computer? Why
don't you think for a minute before you open your mouth, because its statements
like that and the mentality that they represent that has gotten us in the
present stupid legal situations that we are in now.
I use postfix and Maildir. Postfix also supports Maildir and I like it better
syntax-wise and config-wise than qmail. Not a flame, just a personal
preference. I like Maildir cause I can impose quota on a box with multiple
users and have their mail in their home dir fall under the quota. Also, I am
sure someone will mention (if they haven't already) that Maildir works better
when used with nfs (file locking) and mutt supports it. I also use courier
imapd (which is the only IMAPD that I have found that works with Maildir.) and
Outlook express works fine. Honestly, my/var is usually a lot smaller than my/home and I just find the concept of ~/Maildir per user to be a lot neater.
YMMV.
Ok, just to jump into the fray, (sorry if someone else has asked this question,
but its late where I am), does anyone know how to chroot bind 9? I looked at
the docs, looked on the web and have asked on the mailing list. No one seems
to know. I currently run bind chrooted (I know its possible to break out, but
every little bit helps) and would like to do the same with bind 9. If anyone
on the bind development team reads this, or anyone who develops internet
service based software (ftp, http, whatever), including documentation that
details how end users can at least add an additional layer of protection when,
not if, bugs and exploits are discovered, would be GREATLY
appriciated. Don't get me wrong, I applaud your efforts, but sometimes finding
information, even when you think you know what your doing can be kinda
fustrating. 8*). Also, anyone have problems upgrading to v9? I am especially
interested in anyone who is doing dynamic dns with it. Last one to upgrade is
a rotten egg! 8*)
There goes the assertion/urban myth that Linux was proof against virii and
such.
A "worm" isn't a virus. A virus is a hidden executable that spreads within a
computer. A worm is a script or program that hits a computer and then goes to
other computers. All this is is a script that attacks network services, sends
an email and then looks for other computers. There is a difference.
Quick question, I am using ext3 right now because (one reason) easy
upgradability. I recall hearing that if you wanted to upgrade reiserfs, you
had to re-format the partition in order to use it. Has that changed? Can I
umount and remount a partition in order to use an updated resierfs filesystem?
I have looked at the resierfs page and haven't been able to find any
information.
Why is everyone saying that they can't use USB on their computer due to it
running linux? I have been using usb on my linux boxes for over 6 months. The
new kernel 2.2.18 has it backported so you don't even have to patch your
kernel. Sorry if this is off-topic but its just starting to get old.
There is a securid program that runs on the Palm platform. Check out
4securedata.com for
more info. I was going to go this route before cisco incorporated ssh in their
IOS.
Quite frankly, this mini-series is the reason I bought a TiVo. Primed and
ready to go. Anybody else doing the same thing? Also, how long do you think
it'll be before it shows up on the internet?
Couldn't you get pass the 800x600 screen resolution limitation by using
framebuffer? Thats how I got my laptop to do more then 800x600. I even got it
up to 1280x1024 but the screen was madly off center.
I know you are a troll, but I feel that I have to say this in case anyone is
reading the comments without reading the article. The main focus of the
article is that numourous bugs have been fixed in the mozilla source tree, but
that the patches are not being applied to Netscape 6 out of fear of a shipping
delay.
They already tried to sue makers of modchips. The case was dismissed if I
recall correctly. Basically, the courts said that once a person bought the
hardware, it was theirs to do with as they will. If they want to take it apart
and soldier a mod chip in, it was their right. Just don't come crying to Sony
if you fry it. A very sane and reasonable descision, of course this was before
DMCA.
I have a pencil in my pocket that can be used to kill a person. Same with my
belt, the chain attached to my wallet, and the edge of my hand. Is the
goverment going to legislate that away as well?
I have to wonder if maybe this is a new tactic in the console wars. Everyone
knows that the consoles are loss-leaders. The money is made from the games.
Now, if Sega, realizing that everyone is basically waiting for the PSX2 (in
theory) works out a deal with DC pirates to stop distributing their games in
exchange for stock and FOCUS on distributing PSX2 images, might this not be a
pretty good stratigic move on Sega's part?
Recruit the underground pirate
scene as allies against a rival. Maybe this isn't so far fetched after all.
Thats true. Good thing most laptops have an option to turn off the cpu varience in the BIOS. I haven't had a problem with my Dell. (Actually, I turned the cpu varience off before I installed linux on it.) 8*)
Arrogance is a poor substitute for intelligence. You might do well to remember that.
