This is simply a way to enhance the User Experience to Empower them by having them cooperate in their pwnage. Obviously, Micro$loth is continuing its effort to encourage the masses, and Make the World a Better Place.
For myself, I've always considered the Auto-Run the tool of Satan.
There's a Level(3) fiber path that runs around the site. They had to reroute the path when it was under construction, and neglected to tell us. Then when I reported a fiber outage, they took 3-1/2 hours to realize that the maintenance was under way and tell me. I'd bet on that being the connection.
about the assertion "... it isn't even clear if there is a long term future for office suites at all". Does this refer to the movement to the Cloud for office applications? There will long be those who are not willing/able to "Cloud" their operations for various religious, organizational, or practical reasons. Thus, there will be a "long term future". Or so my flavor of Kool-Aid tells me.
When we had -20 degree (Fahrenheit) weather at my University, the main Ethernet switch in the (unheated) wiring closet had its FDDI interface pack up. I just stole a torchiere lamp from a grad student's office and put it under the problem box. No problems, except for the ice on the way home. Incandescence just works!
I take offense to the submitter's implications. Mine has been a great vehicle for building our state's optical network. 172k in 5.5 years, and a lot more comfortable than a Ford Econoline! If Chrysler hadn't discontinued the trusty Cherokee, I'd have one of them, but it really didn't have the cargo capacity of the T&C.
I remember slot cars with great fondness... I think there might be a slot car track still in town. I still have my Revell set in the garage, but the controllers are MIA.
That being said, how about using a Cadillac power antenna to move the neutron source in/out of a 5W teaching reactor? We had to do that when the safety office wouldn't let us use underclassmen to do it.

If so, that's a very slick solution for semiconductor fabs....
