  1. Where is the threshold of pain? on On DDoS, SPAM, Telemarketing And Harrasment? · · Score: 1
Most telemarketing calls are by a few telemarketing companies. Say you're a dry cleaner - you don't have the a) time or b) energy to make the cold calls yourself, so you hire Bob's Telemarketing Company to make the cold calls for you. They also have demographically sorted lists for targets, etc.

A dude in Chicago (I believe) successfully defended himself against the barage of dinner-time phone calls by 1) getting the name of the telemarketing company that was calling him (not to be confused with the company whose products were being peddled,) 2) telling them not to call him again, and 3) getting an address to write. He then sent a registered letter to each company informing them that he did not wish to be called, and if they did he would charge them $500 for, get this, using his personal telephone equipment for their marketing purposes without his consent. Well, one company did call back, he sent them a bill, they didn't pay, he sued and won! Too cool!

Even if you don't want to do the letter writing thing, this approach is still insanely efficient because it nicks the problem at the source - the telemarketing company. So, you have to ask yourself one question: is the threshold of pain low enough to go to all the trouble?

that the best way to deal with hackers is to hire them. If two dudes working in separate locations can cooperatively crack their software, who says their competition can't? Hire these guys to figure out how to make it tougher to crack. In reality these guys did about $100K in security research for them. Can't see the forest yadda yadda yadda.

I think the point of asking fundamental questions is to see if the applicant has an understanding of the fundamentals. This is akin to making sure the student knows how to add on their own before giving them a calculator. I would never hire (and never have) a programmer who does not know the basics, has read some (or at least heard ) of the literature.

If you only hire programmers who rely on established and provided data structures and who don't grok the fundamentals, then please tell me the name of your company so I can avoid your products - because they're most likely built by robots who don't know what the hell they're doing.

I have 20 years in this business. On a recent investigation into the Valley I was told that there were 500K openings. After registering with several head-hunters and not getting any nibbles at all I assumed that either there were not a half-million jobs to be had or that the jobs were for new-grads who would take less money and work insane hours. A friend who is VP-tech at an Oakland startup says that he has no end of interviewees, but that the problem is finding one that knows what the hell they're doing. "You will be building an object database, guided by a four-state machine..." "A what?" Simple text book stuff. There are those that go to school to learn, and others who just go.

  7. Re:yeah, so what? on How many hours did you work this week? · · Score: 1

The point isn't that you're making less/hour than the McDonalds guy. The point is that someone else is getting rich off the un-compensated extra hours you're putting in. Unless you own/have equity in the enterprise, putting in extra hours is gravy for The Man. I work ungodly hours too, but I have equity. When times are slower I'll take it back. This is the pact. Anyone who does more than a day's work for a day's wage without a net/plan is a chump.
